Called The Four Conditions
1.Waking life. Outward-moving consciousness. This is a normal state, observing and interacting.
2. Dreaming Life. Inner Moving consciosness. this is basically daydreaming, imagination, zoning out, dreaming while sleeping.
3.Sleeping Life. Silent consiousness. Sleeping without dreaming, unaware of ones own existence. A state of peace.
4. Atman. Om. This is the tough one to explain. This is the state that the sages reach, a moment of perceiving eternity, non duality, of being one with Atman, which is the highest part of a human consciousness, the Atman also being one with Brahman which is "ONE". Everything. The supreme self.

Try various translations of the Upanishads as well as commentaries on the Upanishads.
I recommend one book which is a commentary on several Hindu sacred texts that definately covers the indepth details, etc, of this very subject (amongst other philosophical and theological ideas)
"Windows Into The Infinite : A Guide To The Hindu Sacred Texts"
You can purchase it on Amazon.com

mundakopanishad,describes this to last perfection.
swami rama, a master who left this planet, has an english version,on this, his another book living with himalayan masters, has many referances, and its a joy read, have read it 25 times the least.ramkrishna mission, has 2 books avalable,a commentry, on this,in english and hindi.
the best way is to practice it ur self.vigyan bhairav tantra, has the best methods described.
osho ,rajanish,s book of secrets,or vigyanbhairaw tantra, describes it well.ur personal expirience is the final word.
vigyan bhairaw tantra, sanskrit text, and english commentry by jayadeo singh, is the most authentic book avalable,he was guided by swami laxmana joo, a genuine master, is also worth paying for.book is available from ,motilal banarasidas ,publishers.
anapansati yoga taught,by vipassana centres,is the best available practical training place as of today.that is my personal view.no definations are usefull, please expirience it ur self,
sati patthan sutta, taught by these centrs is the best cource, afterwards.
in fact, sati-patthan sutta, is complete anwser to ur question, but again words,r, of very little use, heard from the master, such as kalyanmitra goenkaji, has better effect,.this course is also available at vippasanna centres all over the world.
now after writing so much,if i give u definations, they will be mine, and of no,or very little use to u.
forgive me for suggestions.regards.

waking where the conciousness identifies itself with the body, dreaming- when consciousness tries to fulfil or satisfy its desires which are not fulfilled, profound sleep where conciousness detatch itself from the body!
