First it is possible for people to be demon possessed. A couple of years ago, when I was teaching on spiritual warfare, a man contacted us that was possessed with over 30 demons. You can read an actual transcript of this in the first link below.
I have noticed that someone said MPD (DID) or multi personality disorder indicates they have demons. It does NOT. I have been working with several who have MPD and many of the alters have accepted the LORD and have declared Jesus to be LORD of LORDs and a demon can not do this. Many of these alters have in turn led other people to the LORD. Demons certainly would not do this.
How can one recognize a demon? History would be a factor. Did the host do things in the past that would be a gateway to demonic activity such as being active in the occult or using fortune tellers or ouija boards Drug addiction can also be an invitation as well as sexual addiction.
One thing that I have found to expose these demons more then anything else is giving praise to the LORD Jesus Christ.
There is hope for those who have demons. They can be freed by the power of the Blood of Jesus Christ as seen in the link below.
The best way to avoid this is to have a relationship with GOD instead of being religious. Check the 2nd link below to find out how.
Because of an e-mail I have recieved for this answer, I would like to add my reply to that e-mail
This is the e-mail (I will not disclose who it is from)
Yes they do have demons. MPD people need to be locked up so they can't hurt anyone. they are evil people. mean evil people. if you work with them you better be careful. i wouldn't go near the freaks.
My Reply:
What experiance do you have with those with MPD?
I have worked with many that have it, and I have met many of them in person. I can often tell who I am talking to when an alter is out. Yes a few have been demons but if one has trusted the LORD they should not fear them.
Do you have any idea of why someone is MPD? They do not need the abuse so many still give them because they have it.
(it is cause by severe childhood abuse)
These people need love and acceptance just like anyone else.

There are diverse ranges of demon possession. each psychic, fortune teller and witch accepted practitioner and occultist has demons, yet lots of the time they don't look completely demon possessed. in the adventure that they were, they'd probable be doing terrible such issues as undesirable killings, mass murders, and some thing that absolutely opposes the affection of God. those who hate Christ would have demons. If someone is speaking with yet another voice it really is probable a demon. Psychiatrists can't take care of demon possession in any respect. in case you count on truly one of them and characteristic that mission, you could finally end up in a psychological employer for life and go by terrible issues. it really is optimum to get help from a spirit-filled pastor, an complete Gospel pastor or bypass to a deliverance center form of church.

honestly if someone is posessed by such a thing, especially over a long term, if you have to ask, you probably won't be able to tell for quite some time.
sometimes such things appear similar to multiple personalitys... but not always. sometimes the "legitimate" personalitys even are able to distinguish between parts of their collective self and entitys that are NOT part of their actual self.
I think to someone who has only their organic senses, and/or are not pretty strong with their spiritual sense, almost all posession type things would be essentially indistinguishable from mood swings or "I wonder if they are bipolar or manic-depressive or something" type personality quirks.
edit: and no, MPD is not always demons. in fact most of the time it isn't. but sometimes it can be.... which makes it so much clearer. lol.

Skin hot to touch, but always cold on the inside. Foul odor.Signs of schitzophenia. One battling with a duality in one's own consciousness. Not to be mistaken with multiple personality disorder. We create our own demons by living in a way that opposes our conscience. The further you go down that path, the worse it gets, and the longer it takes to heal. Don't check into a psych ward, they'll just drug you up and isolate you. Then you'll just give up and allow yourself to be labelled "crazy" and live with that stigma the rest of your life. The best thing is to stay in society, but aviod the catalyst that began the downward spiral, and people with demons, metaphorically or literally, always know just what the catalyst was....

There would be bright lights and a director and the victim would be surrounded by actors--usually not very good ones. The smell of pea soup would be heavy in the air and the victim would be a bit nervous about memorized lines and hitting their mark.

I'm a demon, and I tell you this: If a man can relate to the sadness of others and feel compassion for any soul that suffers (even those burning in Hell) then he is surely a demon.

I've always heard that a demon cannot say the word "Jesus". Of course they are evil in every way.

Every person is governed by a demon. It is called human nature. Human nature is "I want to exploit the other for my own fulfillment."
