There are entire BOOKS written on this subject. There's no way to answer it here with any degree of completeness.
It's good that you're asking questions in advance....but please do some research in a more appropriate place (like the library.) Call the shelter and ask if one of the experienced workers has time to counsel you. Call your veterinarian. They'll know experienced puppy-owners who might be willing to offer advice. Also...some of the dog magazines periodically have good summary articles about basic puppy care. I would advise against consulting a pet store employee. They often have very limited education....and are specifically trained to sell what they have on the shelves.
Don't forget to check into what you'll need to spend to keep your pup from getting sick, too. They need certain medical care just like having human children. If you don't provide it, you'll likely experience heartbreak. You need to plan and budget for that in advance.
Good luck!

How old are you? First of all if you get a puppy the #1 thing you will need is an odor neutralizer because it will be going potty all over the place! it is a lot of responsbility. They will chew on EVERYTHING. tables, chairs, shoes, clothes... when they are puppies they also require a series of shots, which costs a bit of money. if you get a small pup with short hair, it will probably need to be groomed about once every 1-2 months... you should probably get a crate to crate train it (which makes house training easier as well). You must have TIME.... if i didn't work at home and couldn't spend all day with my pups, i probably wouldn't have gotten them. good luck, my puppies are terrors, but are the loves of my life!

Well i have 2 small dogs, one is 2yrs now and she is a Maltese and the other is 9 weeks and she is a Pug, now before i picked up my Pug i bought her a nice comfy bed, nothing too high on the sides as puppy and well older dogs too will tend to lay their heads on the rim of the bed and if it is a high rim then the puppy will be sleeping with it's head in a really uncomfortable position, i also bought her flea and worm solution and good dog biscuits and food, i bought longlife goats milk, which you can devide and freeze as the take ages to finish it, i bought weatbix cereal and baby farax for her, lots of toys and warm blankets, puppy pads for indoor messes, a puppy pen, soft brush, teething bone, harness and lead, to take her outside to the toilet and a snugglepuppie, this is a teddie in the shape of a dog, it has a heating thing inside that you heat up and has this monitor inside that beats, so that you puppy feels like it is lying next to her mummy and doesn't get to sad. That is basically it, i cook for my dogs so food wise i only bought biscuits and treats....
Good luck, if you need any more advise please email.

Staffordshire bull terrier(Mini pitbull) 35lbs full grown. For a pup, food and water dishes, chew toys, collar and leash and a couple dog beds. The most important thing for your pup to be happy is** YOUR COMMITMENT TO TRAIN HIM WELL** as a well trained dog is a safe and happy dog. Get yourself a book on basic Puppy training and look into obedience classes for when he is older.Your dog will need to be walked twice daily and played with daily. depending on what breed he may also need grooming. If you check out my 360 you can see a little picture of my dog Holli in her Harley sidecar. She will be on T.V. Oct. 30 On "The Dog Whisperer"

i understand just how u feel! i got a puppy four months ago. first thing u should do is take him to a vet. make sure he/she has all the vaccinations that are needed. then, you should also get a doghouse (crate first) BEFORE you bring him home so he can get used to it. u should also get him puppy food (formula if he's really young). and get him some toys (i got my pug teething toys and few others like a plastic hotdog, balls, frisbee, etc.) since he's a puppy, he's going to have to be housetrained. and most important of all, walk him everyday. hope this helps!

I suggest going to your local shelter. They may have puppies, or an older dog you fall in love with. They will tell you everything you need to care for it, regardless. Basics are a cage, blanket, food and water dish, leash, shots, chew toys, room to play and explore, exercise, place to "go to the bathroom", training on bathroom and other commands (sit, stay, etc.), love, TIME, care!!!!! It's just like having a baby!
Good Luck!!! : )

Looking after a pup is like taking care of your own baby...you have to give it your whole attention and love or it will feel lonely...first of all feed it well but dont overfeed it...then start toilet practice from the day one....as soon as it is fed take it for a walk...groom it well...give him a bath once a week...play with him...talk to him...if you want to punish him use a paper roll..please dont beat him with anything else...get him vaccinated periodically...get ,him chew stick or some dog chew for time pass..good luck...

Well you need to consider how much grooming your dog will require. You need to make sure that it is up to date on all vaccinations. Feed your dog good food, play with it, enroll it in training classes as soon as possible. Get it spayed within 6 months, not unless you are planning on breeding- which you need to make sure you can handle that if you choose to do so. Um..... I don't know what else....
