12gb might not be enough, when doing restore don't forget that first it copies then it extracts and then installs, so if you have something is 5gb big you might need 15gb of free space

You have 12 Gb available but windows also reserves space for a swap file, also other programs may reserve space for their files.

Your HD if it is a newer computer probably has a 60Gb or higher hard disk, if you have only 12 Gb left then you have used over three quarters of it up and there would obviously not be room for the backup on your HD.

Of course you neglected to mention the original size of your hard disk, you neglected to say which O/S version you are using etc.

If you were to post the capacity of your HD then simple mathematics divided by the compression ration you chose to back up your files would give you the figure you need to do a backup, remember what school taught you!

Simply because you are probably short of room in you hard drive.
Check that and see how much free space you have left on your hard drive. If you don't have enough, get and install an additional hard drive and move some of your data to the second drive.

do you have a partition? 12 gb is a lot of space.. are u sure its 12gb free space on ur local c drive?
if not.. if it is all full u will need to get rid of temp files.
otherwise .. run a repair utility on ur HDD.
right click on ur local drive, choose properies, go to tools and run the check disk utility

At a guess, I'd say the backup is going to require more than 12gb.

I'd say you need a bigger hard drive. I wouldnt go less than 100 gb myself
