If they are registered somewhere, then any gift off of the list is automatically a great choice. After all, they picked it out as something they want/need.
If they don't have a registry, and/or you know them well enough to have a general idea about their house hold goods, then that is a safe gift too. Things like small appliances, kitchen wear, linens, etc... are probably something they don't have much of, or it's something mis-matched and older from college days.
When in doubt, money is the easiest way to give a gift. It's impersonal, but they can use it for whatever they want. The rule of thumb is enough for the couple to eat at a nice restaurant, or the cost to cover your plate at the wedding, which ever is higher. If they are having a cake and champagne wedding, then they aren't spending much on food, so you would go with the restaurant bill. If they are offering a sit down meal, then the plate cost is probably the higher of the two. You shouldn't give less than $50 in any kind of monetary gift, whether it's cash or a gift card.

MONEY!!!!!!!! My hubby and I racked up $1,500 in checks sepparate from gifts. My family is Italian, and, (if you've seen the movie Goodfellas, that's about what it's like) every one of them sent me a gift from my registry and at least $100 a piece. It's tradition in the Italian wedding to give the Bride and Groom and envelope to put in the 'money bag'. When you're young and just getting started in life, money just helps out so much. They can save it, put it as part of a down payment for something, splurge on something like a 44" TV! I hope I helped!!! GOOD LUCK!!!

If they are register at somewhere it will give you many ideas of what to get for them. I got married last yr and the best gift I recieved was money. It help paid for my $50 thousand dallor wedding. I got lots of lame picture frame that cost probably $10 to purchase. I thought those gift were pretty cheap for a wedding present.

What about some Home Inprovement Gift Certificates?
Anything that can help them build their new home into something
they both enjoy. Maybe a Gift Certificate for Home Depot, or even sighn them up for a Demo class in which they will learn how to do it themselves.

Since I am getting married soon and I'm in my early twenties, I can tell you that they'll need the essentials... Believe me when I say, get nothing over the top or cheesy.. They'll appreciate a microwave or a dish set or cookware since there are so many expenses as it is... Unless they're wealthy already then it really won't matter...

A contribution to something of their choice. Money is always great for anyone but some people find giving money a little impersonal. Depending on their plans surprise them with a massage each at their honeymoon destination.

Something off of their registry. Cash at the shower wasnt that big of a deal, but cash at the wedding was great. By the time the day finally got there, I had spent so much money on finishing touches that we needed the extra cash for our honeymoon. It came in handy.

The easiest for you would be cash or gift cards. Its great for them because they can buy the things they did that they didn't get and it helps cut down on getting multiples of the same gift.
