Hes probably really protective of you. He may see that you are vulneble when you are sleeping, and just wants to keep the stranger away. Does he sleep with you or in your room? He may feel that the "intruder" is violating his "space"as well. Also, if hes older, he could be going blind or senial, so you may want to have a vet look at him.

How old is he? How long have you owned him? If he is just now coming into his "man hood"-(2 years) then things like that could be expected. He will want to show others that he is your alpha male, and will want to protect you. Not just that---always pay attention to the people your dog is treating like this. Dogs have always been known to know if your a good person or not.
