This is probably your dads outfit. I spent a major portion of my time in Vietnam (1963) supporting some of these guys, and I hold them in the highest esteem.

The mission may have been different in the Vietnam era, but today:
Special Forces, or "green berets" are charged with what's referred to as unconventional warfare, and indigenous force assistance/multiplication. In short they learn guerilla tactics, counterinsurgency, counterterrorism, and teach it to irregular military groups around the world. Often they'll go into battle alongside those they've been teaching. Certain areas in special Forces will specialize in special areas. ie: "Striker brigade" and be specified for a certain type of mission. I don't remember which is what, but A-teams, and B-teams, are the names for the 2 groups in the Green Berets. Was he in Special Forces specifically? Soldiers in groups like my alma-mater, the Rangers are usually referred to as special forces, rather than the more accurate -special operations-. It's an understandable, but misleading confusion; and can be a major distinction.

Most branches of the military have special forces. In short they are trained to do special missions and go behind enemy lines to mark targets and get information on the enemy before the ground forces go in! They are not all the same but if you really want to see what special forces do for each branch then i would google it. You will find a lot of information!

Special Forces is also known as The Green Beret, My brother was in the special forces. They are trained to go in first to establish communications also to set up and gather intelligence. You should be very proud of your dad. He was one of a hundred on the day he took the test to become a member of the special forces.

Most likely he was a Ranger. You should be proud regardless of which unit he was in.
