As of November 19th Wal-Mart will no longer be accepting anymore layaways and all active layaways MUST be pulled out by December 8th, no exceptions.

Wal-Mart claims they lose money on seasonal items such as clothing and school supplies and such. I have noticed that the Wal-Mart I work at posts a sign that says summer furniture (like what is in lawn and garden) is not able to be put in layaway after a certian date. Why can't they do the same with the other items?

I put in layaways all year long and it is very helpful with Christmas and Birthdays. The only KMart in this area I know of looks like a DUMP!

Anyways what are YOUR feelings of layaway being closed and if you are AGAINST it PLEASE sign this petition started by a motherof 6 that doesn't the layways to stop.

This is my first year shopping for three kids. I have my fiance's two sons and our daughter to shop for (11 yrs, 9yrs, and 20 months) and I have taken advantage of the last layaway I will ever get to do. I really hope this petition works and they do NOT stop it.

Of course they make more money on credit cards, they charge interest and it is a HIGH interest rate too! I have a Wal-Mart credit card with a $100 limit, not much for three kids and we want another baby.

There are over 17,500 signatures! This MAY change their minds if they get a TON more! Keep signing and pass on to your friends!

Also if you like you can have everyone call 1-800-WALMART and voice your opinion with the main office as well, the more calls the better (that is what we have been telling our customers that are mad about this).

I signed the petition and I agree. When I was younger, layaway was how I financed Christmas every year. Now they just want you to get a Walmart Visa and charge everything, which is unfair for people without credit, or people who DON'T want to get mired in credit card debt. I'll keep my fingers crossed the petition works.

Our Wal-Mart claims that they can make more money on credit card sales if they get rid of layaways. I am like you a mother of five that uses layaway as a way to help with birthdays and Christmas. It is also a good way to hide the presents. Wal-Mart has run everyone else out of business here, so we have no where else to really shop. This makes me extremely mad as many people use their layaway I am sure they will lose money.

It's true that some (a very few) people use the layaway program without abusing it. About 10 years ago I worked at Wal-Mart in the layaway department. It was very discouraging and to be honest I totally understand why they are getting rid of the program.

You have to put 10% down to put items on layaway. So, lets say I'd have a customer put $300 of stuff on layaway and put the $30 down. I'd box all the stuff up, carry it up the stairs,etc. Then a coulple weeks later the customer would need the $30 back so she'd cancel the layaway and all that stuff had to be put back in inventory. It's a very large expense to do that. And unfortunately the cancellations happened way more than the people who actually paid theirs off!

All in all it just comes down to a case of a bunch of bad apples ruining it for everyone else.

I think a big fact thats missing is if people are putting things on layaway they may not have credit cards. And even then, I know alot of people who have credit cards for emergency only. They will not buy it when layaway is gone instead of putting it on a credit card.

I thought all stores stopped layaways near Christmas because they get more than they can handle. Walmart around here is famous for losing layaways at Christmas time. They have so many they have to rent 18-wheeler trailers to keep them in. I understand their point of not wanting to do it.

This is not a new thing at Wal-Mart. They need to make room for Christmas lay-aways.

Don't really care. I have never used layaway in my life and never have known anybody who has used it. If you don't have the money to pay for it don't get it!
