I know the potato trick. Sometimes I think it works, sometimes I dont. The other day I was welding with another guy on the inside of a 12x32 steel tank. We both got flash in our eyes but my eyes were killing me the next evening. The worst I ever got. That morning I couldnt open my eyes, couldnt sleep, couldnt stop them from tearing. I just wish there was something I could do if it happens again (besides be careful and not let it happen again). I have to work fast and in 12 hours I cant shield my eyes every time someone else strikes an arc.

The genetic damage to your eye can promote cancer, this is something you have to totally avoid.

Keeping your eyes totally away from the light can help. Wearing sun glasses even indoors. It is likely you will need to miss work tomorrow.

I've seen doctors prescribe antiinflamatory steroids.

There is always a chance that when you get damage like that to the eyes that a bactrial infection can move in.

The Merck Manual states(now free online):

Ultraviolet light exposure is treated with short-acting cycloplegic drugs, an antibiotic ointment, and patching for 24 h.

You really should be wearing protective goggles! I'm serious! You're causing irrepairable damage to your eyes everytime this happens! Try cold compresses whenever this happens...but please check into using goggles
