For a long time some cheaper American cars were many years behind the rest of the world in engineering. Some had side valve engines, semi-elliptic springs, drum brakes all round when some other manufacturers were using overhead valves, independent rear suspensions and disk brakes, at least on the front. But you'll notice I wrote "cheaper". Brands like Buick always had overhead valves, but Buicks were always more expensive than say Dodge or Ford cars.
A lot of the design effort went into producing yearly small or middling changes in body style so that any year's model always looked new even if the underpinnings were the same from year to year.
This all had to do with marketing. The American car makers recognised something long ago, which was demonstrated by the Chrysler "Airflow" in the 1930s. If you have a radical change in body style in a single year people will not buy the car.
In Europe car makers tended to keep body styles for longer but change the engineering more quickly. Even so the Americans were the first to introduce things like full automatic transmission.

Because "American" designers are run by a committee. But some of the Japanese cars aren't exactly winning a beauty contest these days. It's a matter of opinion, and while Toyota and Honda are cleaning house because they're producing a much better product, they aren't as easy on the eyes anymore. People are buying them though, this is what matters.

Yea, too bad cars like the Pontiac Solstice are such boring looking things, huh?
This question is based on the premise that Americans can't do things as well as the rest of the world, and I just don't buy it.

You may be a good designer, but you have a lot to learn about cultural respect. Calling them "Japs" is highly insulting.

You said it. You have the word isn't in there, and I agree completely. American cars are way better... in some cases.
