I have painted many sawblades with oil. and a few mailboxes. Oil is ok but prep is important. Oils will not loose their color and stay longer than acrylics and don't fade as fast. after sanding wash in vinagar . Use the oil straight out of the tube if you thin will loose its "sticking" ability.

YOu can use oil paints, but sand the mailbox down lightly so the paint will have a better adhesion rate and gesso it or prime it and paint it. When yo sand it use fine sand paper.
good luck

Oil paint takes forever to dry, and it will inch down surfaces, so it will run as it dries. Generally, I don't think it would be a good idea.

i would stick to acrylic, otherwise you might end up waiting days for it to dry. i don't know how it will last in the elements. what have you got to lose by trying it?

I don't know if oil will work or not.

But oil takes several days to dry just on a canvas.
