What you eat has more to do with the progress of decay than how well you brush. The "finish" would be when the cavity reaches the nerve and this can happen within a matter of a few months, once it gets started. It's not a good thing to try to find out through personal experience.

It all depends on you and your body. Tooth decay or dental caries is a sticky yellow bacteria that gets stuck to your tooth. If that bacteria isn't cleaned off, it will harden and turn into plaque which in turn must be scraped off by your dental hygienist. Dental caries will infect your tooth and the decay, if not removed and replaced with a filling, will spread into the nerve area of your tooth. This can be very painful if the tooth becomes infected. To answer the first question, I've seen very small cavities become root canals in a matter of months in some people. In others the decay might not spread as quickly. It just depends on you and the nature of your teeth, your diet, and your oral hygiene habits. To answer the second question, naturally, with good oral hygiene, teeth can last the rest of your life. Just remember this...brush 3 times a day, floss at least once a day, see your dentist and dental hygienist for a check up and cleaning every 6 months, and limit the sugar and soda intake to a minimum and you shouldn't have any problems.

If you brush regularly, it shouldn't decay in the first place. But, once it starts to decay, it doesn't take long until the pain sets in. Go see your dentist if this is happening to you.

a regularly brushed tooth will not decay for about 100 years, which is convenient unless you plan to live to 110.
