I just read the latest Dear Abby, and there was a young girl asking for help because her older sister does this thing where she chokes herself to get high from depriving herself of oxygen. I have never heard of this! What is wrong with kids these days?

The old school version of this is called an "elevator" it's basically passing out from lack of Oxygen. Really trippy for a few minutes, then you're back to your old sobber self. I think SE Hinton wrote about it in either "The Outsiders" or "Rumblefish." Its nothing new. The news (20/20 and so on) are trying to find something sensational to report, so you will watch their channel. It's all about advertising dollars. So, we have kids doing the same silly childish stuff that they always have, and we have the media (newly empowered by the Internet) taking advantage of the crisis by making it sound like any kid who does it WILL DIE!... and your child will try it next! just so their Neilson ratings will be higher and they can charge more for their advertisements. I ask you, which is worse... the kids, for doing childish things, or the media (grown adults), for making money from it by making it sound worse than it really is. NO! Kids shouldn't do it, but there are far worse problems for them to deal with than "doing an elevator."

This is how it works. You have the person that wants this done to take a very deep breath.You put your hands around their neck applying enough pressure to close everything off.They then let out all the air they have been holding.At this point they are completely out of it and will need help lying down.This is a very old thing because i had it done to me in 1981. We called it the airplane.Usually we took a hit from a joint while doing this

Yeah I have heard of this. It's like a natural high and also highly dangerous. They choke themselves to get high, and then often pass out. Some even attempt it by semi-hanging themselves, which can lead to deathes. This is a large issue now!

I've seen this on talk shows and news shows. I think it's just so very sad. I made sure my teen son watched it with me - just so he got the information. It's more commonly done by boys... just such a tragedy that kids would think this is something worth doing for a high. We as parents just really have to make sure our kids are getting high on life!

Yes kids are really doing this. And parents remain blissfully ignorant of the whole thing. And then media blows it up and it gets all over all of the news stations. Then kids read about it and think wow maybe I should try it. So yes. And it is stupid.

Kids where doing it when I was in middle school. Im 29 now. I guess someone in the media got a hold of it and ran with it, but its not new. Kids will always look for a thrill, they dont think of consiquences.

YES, THERE WAS AN ARTICLE IN A SEVENTEEN MAGAZINE THAT SAID A GIRL KILLED HERSELF THIS WAY. THE ARTICLE SAID SHE PUT HER HANDS AROUND HER NECK WITH HER THUMBS ON THE BACK OF HER NECK AND PRESSED DOWN HARD. IT IS SAID TO MAKE YOU UNCONSCIOUS FOR A WHILE AND WHEN U AWAKE U GET A RUSH THAT MAKES U FEEL LIKE U ARE HIGH. BUT THIS GIRL DID IT THE WRONG WAY AND CHOKE HERSELF. THERE IS A NAME FOR IT BUT I'M NOT FAMILIAR WITH IT. I HOPE THIS HELPED!

I'm 17 years old.
I'm still a kid too.
But,I've been on my own since I was 13.
Kids are very bad these days.
I admit I started getting high when I was 7 and
I still do.Most kids do it to get attention.
But,I'm the type of person I have respect.I smoke and do everything else.But I never do it in front of anyone.
Cause when you do that you get a Reputation.

Yeah, I've heard of it before, but I heard that boys were masterbating, and then deprived themselves of oxygen at the moment of climax. They would supposedly experience a very intense orgasm. Too bad many of them died because they accidentally hung themselves.

yeah it is called the choking game. There was a 20/20 report on it early this summer. they feel since they are not using drugs it is fine but kids are dieing from it
