I lived there for 7 yrs and to me if you go in early spring about march-april you can see whales migrating if you go on cruises. most people assume that they should go in the winter when it's cold in the states but we don't get snow we get rain so Dec- Feb wouldn't be the time I'd go back.... I've met people who saved money for years and came when all it did was pour rain :( As far as when it's busy it depends on what your going to do, there are a lot of Japanese tourists at a lot of the big attractions so maybe you could call ahead to the places you want to go and ask when they are the least busy to get a better idea....
Hope you have a great time :)

The low seasons for Hawaii travel are May and September. These are the months when the fewest leisure travelers visit the islands.
When I take my family to Hawaii I always schedule the tip for one of these two months.

The month of May is pretty good. I have been in April, May, and this past September. I would say the earliest part of May would be your best bet!

October has always worked well for us. Seems that there is less crowding, maybe because families are home with kids in school.
