Modern Americans have become unaware slaves. This is far worse than being a slave and knowing about it. If you know, you can do something about it. If you don't, you are doomed to permanently work for another's benefit.
As to the slavery of sin, that can be broken by becoming indentured to Jesus. Much better working conditions.

To be in bondage with something and know it's hurting or killing but you refuse to come out of it ' You realize you have a problem(slave)',You have the solution(key)but you refuse to use it to come out(slave) of your own self made prison.
