That means you are a graduate of a 4 (or 2) year college and have taken the state exam for a license in that state. QUITE different from a "vet helper". That would be a Vet Assistant. A Tech can give anesthesia, take x-rays,place catheters,do minor surgical procedures, perform lab work, draw blood, euthanize, and carry out treatments....and all the stuff an "assistant" would do if there is not one.
And know enough to not let sire and daughter breed.
Yeah, and there is no such thing as a "certified" vet!!!!!!!!!! Vets are licensed like doctors..and Vet Techs!!!!
If you hire someone off the street, they are just a vet assistant!!! They can be called a Tech, but they are actually NOT.

a veterinary technician has an associate's degree or certificate in some states, and is just hired off the street and trained on the job in other states. They assist the vet (like hand him things in the operating room or hold a dog for its shots). They sometimes do quite a bit, like function as anesthesiologists. A veterinarian, on the other hand, has as much training as a medical Doctor, only in Veterinary Medicine. So a Vet Tech is not at all the same thing.

A veterinary technician is like a nurse. They basically do everything that doesn't require a veterinary license which generally includes surgery, diagnosing, and prescribing medications. There are differences between certified (also sometimes called registered or licensed) technicians, and On the job trained technicians. OTJ techs are commonly called veterinary assistants, though this term can refer to someone just coming to work off the street with no training to someone who has been assisting for 30 years and has a vast amount of knowledge.

Not a vet, no, but you're like a physicians assistant at the hospital.
You have most of the training of a vet, and can easily finish the training whenever you're ready, and you can administer vaccines and treatments. The Vet will do most diagnostics. Vet techs give shots, draw blood, etc. The vet tech assistant is a step down and does less invasive stuff, such as clipping claws.

A veterinary technician (also called a vet tech), is a person trained and licensed to assist veterinarians. Their job is similar to that of a nurse. They scan animals with various devices like X-ray machines, do blood tests, place IV Catheters as well as Urinary Catheters, give anesthesia, and help the veterinarian in other tasks. Veterinary technicians are different from veterinary assistants, because veterinary assistants are not able to perform many of the jobs.

A veterinary technician is someone who has gone to school for at least 2 years and achieved an Associate Degree of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology. Also, he/she can become registerd with the state that they work in to be a R.V.T. (Registered Veterinary Technician) which is equivalent to a Registered Nurse in human medicine.
A vet tech is a step above a vet assistant and step below a veterinarian.
They cannot prescribe, diagnose, or perform sugery.
I'm a R.V.T. and my duties include: answering phones, restraining animals, assisting vet with various procedures including surgery, performing teeth cleanings, drawing bood, running bloodwork, performing various lab tests (urinalysis, fecal tests, heartworm tests, etc), general cleaning, clipping nails, cleaning ears, giving injections, etc, etc.

Techs can be very good at IVs, blood draws, etc. but other than that they are pretty much clueless about breeding, behavior, etc. I even know one who owns a purebred labradoodle! LOL!
I must comment, a Vet Tech is alot more than a step below a Vet, try MANY steps!

A vet tech is the one who does all the nasty work, while the vetenarian actually does nothing but examine. The vet tech gives shots, weighs, and other stuff, kind of like a nurse assistant, they help the vetenarian do stuff.

Yea, it means that they are a technician who can do testing when the blood is taken or they do the lab work before the Vet. actually looks at the results
