Im always so amused when I hear someone talking about how our soldiers are "fighting for our freedom." The notion, of course, is laughable.
While all the fear-monger types would have us beleive there is some enemy out there systematically trying to deprive us of our freedom, that boogie-man exists only in the vapid confines of childish minds.
The only entity on earth with the power to deprive us of our freedom is our own government. People seem to forget that. We are a disarmed society, quickly becoming a police state while people fret about terrorism. They fear external sources while neglecting the fact that every revolution ever fought for the sake of freedom has been fought against ones own government.
No one has died for american freedom since the Civil war. If you like your freedom, thank the ACLU. Thank a constitutional law scholar. Thank a lawyer or a judge who has struck down a paranoid law designed to oppress. Thank Feingold. THATS where your freedom comes from.

Naturally the more direct answer is that our freedoms derive from our creator.
"...endowed by our creator with certain inalieable rights, among them life liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
Its interesting to hear people speaking today about how our rights "come from" the constitution. Simply false. Anyone with an ounce of education knows that the constitution does not create any freedoms whatsoever, in fact it serves only to limit those freedoms by assigning certain enumerated powers to the federal government.
Hence it is tragic to hear people talk about non-citizens not having the same "rights" as americans. All fundamental rights existing in the constitution pre-exists the document. The bill of rights did not create new rights which "only" americans have. The fact that the bill of rights is being used by some to justify taking away the human rights of others is appalling. All men are created equal. All men have the same rights. You're a dullard to think otherwise.

Where do you think we'd be without our military?? What do you think would have happened after WTC without military action??
It's simple. There'd be more attacks on American soil. The military protects you and your freedoms everyday. Without the military, we'd be attacked again and who's going to protect us and our land?? You?? I highly doubt it or you wouldn't be here saying things like this. The ACLU nothing to protect my freedom. They don't fight terrorists or wars or any of that. They're there for themselves and those that follow their lead. There aren't many judges or lawyers to thank any more. They're the very reason so many criminals walk now days. They're the ones that release drug dealers back on the streets to sell to our children. They're the ones who ensure that rapists get probation so they can turn around and do it again.
The only thing you're right about is our creator. He has given us all we have and we should be thankful for that. Other than that, you're very wrong.

I do agree with you on the fact that the last time this country fought for its own freedom was the Civil war. I also feel that if the Axis countries from WWII had not attacked the U.S. and we had not got involved, there is a great chance that we might have fought on our own soil just like the French and English.
The American people derive their freedom from two sources. The government and ourselves. It can also be deprived by those two persona's.
It is the job of our government to create and pass laws that ensure the safety of its people, nothing more. In recent times, our government has taken on the role of legislating morality. Two instances that come to my mind are gay marriage and on-line gambling. No matter what the opinions of some people are, if this nation was as free as it proclaims, there could not, under any circumstances, be federal bans on any of these topics.
If the government somehow succeeds and passes a law that infringes on our freedoms, luckily there are systems in place to help repeal those few laws. This can only happen if people realize that a wrong has taken place. If people as a whole fail to act then this is how we deny ourselves freedom.
It is only the cooperation between a working government and a participating people that freedom really exists.

Quickly becoming a police state? Your statements really make me wonder if you have ever been outside the United States. I have been to North Korea and I can tell you what a police state looks like, and it isn't the United States. Every revolution for freedom fought against one's own governement? Are you not familiar with Nazi incursions into France, Czechoslovakia, and Russia? Perhaps you forgot that Japan forcibly "colonized" Korea? The preservation of the nation's ability to not have to bow to the wishes of other countries enables us to live freely. The US is not a colony of any nation. A strong economy enables that freedom. A strong military enables that freedom. Transparency in government and the ability to remove corrupt officials enables that. Do you think a strong constitutional law scholar plays a bigger part? Our nation is not disarmed. We are quite well equipped. Proof is that our economy and our nation did not collapse on 9/11.

For the protectors life has a flavor the protected will never know. Give it some thought, then make sure to go out and vote. Your god did not secure your freedom, a dead soldier did, Go and vote out the scum bags that disgrace these dead hero's by taking our freedoms away so they can feel a little safer.Ben Franklin"those that would be willing to give up freedoms just to feel a little more security do not deserve either of them" Once u[pon a time a Russian leader Premier Kruschauve uttered the words "we will bury you" and our President at that time did not put us into frenzy of fear. We are a country of cowards like Li ll g.w. A coward and draft dodger. Stand up and question those that send our children to die for the wrong and unjust reasons. Thank you very little. [1] The Declaration of Independence [2] The Constitution [3] The Rule of Law.For all of the Faults, and Abuses of the System, it's the best thing going. We have to put up Walls to keep People Out.Totalitarian Dictatorships that Despise and truly wish to destroy America have to put up Walls to keep their People in.The ACLU seems to be more interested in Protecting Child Molesters, Sado-Masochists, and Jihadists that have clearly Stated Their Goal, "Death to America".If the ACLU was really sincere, They would Question the EPA-OBD II Law that Al Gore helped to Pass. This Insane Law mandates that all Gasoline Powered Vehicles in the USA from 1996 to the Present must run at 14.7 Parts of Air to 1 Part of Fuel.No Exceptions. Under this Insane Law, a Vehicle can Fail Inspection for not Emitting enough Pollution. My Avatar is a Photo of Gasoline Converted to Propane, Ignited to Prove it Works. 50 + MPG, & 10 X less Pollution with even the Largest SUV is doable with Vaporized Fuel.http://www.fuelvapors.com & http://energy21.freeservers.com/bookrep.html are 2 Sites that go a Long way to Prove it.We all need to Breathe Fresh Clean Air, and Global Warming is for real. But the ACLU is more Concerned with calling an Inverted Crucifix Immersed in a Container of Urine, and a Rectally Inserted Bullwhip Art, and Demanding that Taxpayer Dollars Support it.And no One has Died for American Freedom since the Civil War ? Can I Please Sell You the Brooklyn Bridge, Filled with OBD II Vehicles that only Consume 10 % of the Fuel in their Tanks, Thanks to Your Hero, Mr. "Inconvenient Truth" ? You need Serious Help !

Yet another psuedo intellectual diatribe by someone who wants to appear smarter than they really are. You sound suspiciously like a college student who has been listening to some ultra-left wing professor in some Liberal Arts college with an agenda and no life experience outside of the classroom. You are either too naive and inexperienced or too utterly stupid to formulate opinions of your own based on what has happened in the past and what is happening now.
I'm sure that the people of Europe and Asia during the late 1930's and early 1940's, or the old Soviet Union would disagree with you about enemies that deprive you of freedoms. If you honestly believe that the threat from these "enemies" would not have shown up on our own soil eventually had they not been stopped, you are a fool of the highest magnitude. (Gee, didn't that happen after the Civil War?) You are too busy hating your own country and coutrymen to look past the left wing veil over your eyes. That's OK though, you go ahead and live in the conveniently constructed world where you can belive the crap you posted. Guys like myself and a new generation of realists will guard the wall and protect your right to be wrong, and we'll endure your backbiting, derisive, sneering invective while we do it. As you look down your nose at us and tell everyone in high sounding phrases how we are an anachronism, we'll prepare to protect your sorry *** when the time comes. I'm an old retired Marine who has been to places like Beirut where , in October of '83, helped zip a couple of hundred guys into body bags who did not have the luxury of your fantasy. I now work as a cop and I still don't live in a world here in the US where we people who have to deal with life's realities can afford the luxury of your view point.
It's one thing to spout high minded sounding drivel on an internet site, it's entirely another thing to deal with a dangerous world in reality. It's also incredibly stupid to think that the enemies growing out of countries like Iran etc... won't continue to grow and present a real threat to us eventually. I would rather fight that war someplace other than US soil. I'm not convinced Iraq is the place , but anyplace besides here.
Look kid, we live in a dangerous world. History (you know, the record of events that have actually happened) has taught us this, over and over again.
It's insanely naive to think that the liberal thinkers that populate the organizations you listed could ever protect us from a real enemy with real guns and a real agenda based on a hatred of our Society. It's nice to allow yourself to live in a place where lawyers and judges are your heroes, as some legitimately are. But if you really believe that they are the only ones who protect your freedom, drive to Manhattan and go down to the southern end and look at the big hole in the ground there, and think again. Or maybe you can get one of your judicial heroes to legislate from the bench and stop another World Trade center attack from happening. Good luck with that. When it doesn't work, me and mine will be ready to clean up the mess.

You think you are so wise and shrewd. For someone to have the vocabulary you do and the ability to use it to it's fullest I would think you would have some intelligence rolling around in that lump on top your head.
You are not wise, just arrogant. If you really want to be somebody, why don't you take some time to consider the possibility that you might be wrong about a whole lot of things you've been arguing about.
You are not above anyone, yet you pretend to be. You are a frightened little child that doesn't know what to do next. All you can do is cry and put blame on everyone else. Stand up. Be a man. Look around. Maybe you'll learn something.

Your question seems incredibly hateful and closed minded. If so, I hope that someday you'll be able to see my response objectively. There's no single "boogie man" trying to take our freedom. What is a threat is what comes out of an isolationist, passivist mentality. The "fight the enemy on foreign shores, lest we fight them on our own" doctrine is one learned by the bloody example of WWII. The heartbreaking loss of life in WWI was pointed to as why we should ignore the rest of the world. That seige tactic is seen as weakness by power mad despots determined to subjugate humanity to thier own agenda. In a nutshell, weakness makes attack irresistable to the psychotic. History is the proof. Can examples be "cherry picked" and others ignored to argue my point? Yes, but 2 trees aren't a forrest.
