Click on your present avatar and then choose "Edit My Info."
Follow the yellow brick road. You will have to set up a Yahoo! 360 page if you want a custom avatar (like a real photo) but there are directions for that.
I guess you don't need a 360 page if you want a cartoon avatar.

When you first log on to yahoomail.com. and next to the message saying wlcome juan you have # messages. Just click on your avatar.
