Well, don't be afraid to sit next to him and start talking to him. See how he responds. Maybe you could subtly suggest that you two could get together to study in between classes and let it go where ever it goes from there.

If you really like him then simply ask him if he has a 'gf'. If he does he'll let you know, if he doesn't (and he's breathing) he'll know you're interested, and if he's interested... The rest is easy!
