You can use almost any program to scan if the scanner's drivers are set up correctly. One possibility is MS Word. I wouldn't suggest this for pictures because a .doc file tends to be big when you embed pictures, but most photo editing software uses a similar process. In Word, click on "insert" from the main menu bar. Scroll down to picture and in the next menu that pops up choose from scanner or camera. Once you do this HP's software will pop up and be pretty easy to follow. Like I said, most photo programs use a similar process. I have a 1400 series all in one HP and the program that came with it is called HP Photosmart Premier. If you have something like that on your computer, you can start the program and click on the "get images" button. A menu should pop up that says from camera, from scanner, etc. Hope this helps.

HPs are great. I have two all-in-ones. I don't understand why you are having difficulty in scanning. I am not familiar with your model, but mine has a top-load.
- lift the lid
- put item to be scanned face-down on the glass
- close lid
- press "scan" button or work with the P-S-C toolbar.
Perhaps you did not configure it yet.
Assuming you have installed it, see if it is working properly:
cl Start
cl Settings
cl Control Panel
cl System
cl Hardware
cl Device Driver
R-cl on the item to be checked. Click Properties.
That will tell you if the item is working properly.
You should have an icon on the desktop for the P-S-C
Open it, check all the options, and configure.
