My son is 8 yrs. old and we just went to the eye doctor. his vision is 20/40 & 20/25 corrected and he has a lazy eye (left). I know it's bad for a child of his age but "How bad is it?" Do I need to worry about blindness? I was adopted so I don't know any medical history & His father is out of the picture so I have no info there...
Should I push for more indepth testing to be done or not?

He does have glasses and wears them. The doctor also mentioned an eye patch but didn't push the patch because of the glasses he said.

Yes pursue this. Correction of lazy eye is best by age 5. See if the doctors can correct the problem with glasses. Minor surgery is sometimes indicated. Depending on how great the degree of strabismus (lazy eye), the brain can stop recognizing the image coming from the non-dominant eye and cause a brain blindness in that eye.

I had a lazy eye, too, and had to wear a patch over the good eye to make it stronger, when I was 5-7 years old. His vision is not that bad, though. Mine was much worse, and now I am +5.50 and i can wear contacts (20/20 corrected). He'll be fine!

No matter what you history is he still needs to be seen by an eye doctor to correct the lazy eye and get corrective glasses...... why don't you go to the store, put on a pair of reading glasses and see how well you can see things.... it is awful to let your son sit around with out glasses or corrective surgery.
If you can not afford it contact the LionsClub or Shriners they are always willing to help a child in need of medical attention... My son got his first glasses because of the Lions Club when I couldn't afford them.

I started wearing glasses at age 7. I still wear the, and can not get lasic surgery due my vision. However I DO JUST FINE - my corrected vision is normal.
Do make sure you go to an opthanologist rather than an opticmologist (not sure of spelling, just make sure s/he is a full doctor).

Lazy eye-did he mention wearing a patch over that eye?
I grew up w/a guy that had it DX at 6 years old. He wore the patch + glasses & he's 45 years old now & is fine.

I would get a second opinion and see if it compares to that of the first but he probably need to just wear glasses. Its not the end of the world.

nah, i have horrible vision. and i used to have lazy eye when I was a kid. most likely they will correct the lazy eye with patch over his right eye to strengthen the muscle in the left eye. i really really doubt he will go blind. but you should voice your concern to his doctor.
