Alcoholism is a disease where the body is fully addicted to the alcohol and goes through withdrawal symptoms when going for too long without it. Alcoholics may not even be aware that they suffer from it, but there is a constant compulsive need to drink. A drunk still knows when to quit while an alcoholic does not and may even drink themselves into alcohol poisoning. To put it simply: Alcoholics suffer from a disease; drunks do not.
