The word of God (the Bible) is the Sword of the Spirit. You use it by speaking it out.

The sword of the spirit. God’s word, or message, recorded in the Bible is like a powerful two-edged sword that can cut down religious falsehood and help righthearted people find spiritual freedom. (John 8:32; Hebrews 4:12) This spiritual sword can also defend us when we are assaulted by temptations or apostate attempts to destroy our faith. (2 Corinthians 10:4, 5) How thankful we are that ‘all Scripture is inspired of God and completely equips us for every good work’!

When he was tempted by Satan in the wilderness, Jesus effectively used the sword of the spirit to fend off false reasoning and cunning temptations. To each challenge of Satan, he replied: “It is written.”

Finally, the apostle Paul helps us to see how we can use God’s Word as a sword. When warning us against “the governments, against the authorities, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the wicked spirit forces in the heavenly places,” he urges us to “accept the sword of the spirit, that is, God’s word.” (Ephesians 6:12, 17) God’s Word is an indispensable weapon that we can use to cut away at any ideas that are “raised up against the knowledge of God.” 2 Corinthians 10:3-5.

Ephesians 6:17. The sword of the spirit is the word of God. You use the sword by knowing God's word, applying it to your life, and by teaching it to others. It is used as an offensive weapon in confronting temptation, as opposed to the rest of the armor of God mentioned in the passages previous to the one above. You use the sword by recognizing temptation and then defeating those temptations by applying the word of God to them. You are tempted to lust, but you know lust is wrong because the Word of God tells you so, therefore you apply the sword to the temptation and defeat it. You are tempted to speak harshly to someone, but the Bible tells you not to do this, so you apply the sword, which is the Bible, and cut off the hasty words you were going to speak. The sword is obviously a metaphor, applied in such a way that people of the time would understand what was meant. A sword was used to attack enemies, which in this case are the 'wiles' or temptations of the devil (Ephesians 6:11). There are 5 (I think) defensive pieces of 'armor' and one offensive tool, the sword.

Make sense?

Part of the "whole armor of God", the "sword of the spirit, which is the word of God" (Eph. 6:13-18) is used properly when it is studied, handled correctly, and preached to others. (2 Timothy 3:16 - 4:3)

Do not add to, take from or distort the word of God in any way (Deut. 4:2)

What an awesome question, I have an answere, the BIble is said to be thr sword of God, it is his word and his testimony of truth to al men. Now to the second issue, How do you use this sword? The Bible gives us a key when witnessing in order to use his sword properly to bring about true understanding and contrirtion for our sins, this key is Gods Law (Ten Commandments). next time you wittness to someone, dont just give them the Gospel, take them through the Ten Commandments. For example, ask them if they have ever lied, stolen or looked with lust. Reveal then to them that God has declared that those who have broken His law will be given Justice, and the Punishment is hell. the give the good news. the Law is desgned to bring about the Knowledge of sin, the Apostle Paul said that he knew sin through the law. I personallly came to a knowledge of sin by examintaion of the Law. i realized I had transgressed a multitude of times and that Gods wrath abided upon me, then I repented (turned form sin) and trusted the Savior (Jesus) and I have eternal life. The god news will seem exceedinly wonderful to them in light of How our sins are exeedingly sinful before the eyes of a Holy God. otherwise by not opening the Law of God, were not using the sword as instructed and we will bring about false converts. so, remeber to open up the Law, use the sword that it might bring someone to accurate knowledge of the Gospel.
