Can someone translate this for me about my retainer?
I had my braces on for 3 years. I had them taken off, and one of the things my orthodontist told me was "You've had them on so long, your teeth are set, they aren't going anywhere. Wear the retainer though....." And she told me to wear them for a little while before i wear them just at night. And she said it depends on how long I progress with wearing them.

I just got my top one and it's making me talk funny. Now let me elaborate....I am VERY conscientious about my teeth and whether or not they will move. I finally have a normal smile after years of not......

I also checked in with my ortho today( not the assistant) and she didn't say anything about how often I should wear it, she just put them on (granted she was busy).......

Is this translating to, just wear it at night?

Just wear it at night. You should be fine. You will get to a point as well when you won't even feel like doing that anymore. Your teeth may shift around a bit, but that is just a part of aging anyway--braces or no braces.

LOL, gotta love Doctors! And yes, Orthodontist are Doctors.. before someone makes a comment on that!!

Anyways, i would call back... and talk to an assistant, if your doctor is to busy to speak. Which is 98% of the time. I'm an Assistant, and the doctor is always telling us to 'take the call, he doesnt have time to answer questions'!!

So, i would call back.. and ask again. I'm assuming by your question, you have a 'Upper Removable Retainer Appliance'.. and our 'Ortho' patients, we tell them to wear it ALL the time, except for eating and like sport events if you play a sport. DO NOT wear it, if your playing a sport. Otherwise, WEAR IT 24/7... and yes, its gonna take some time to get use to. And yes, your gonna talk funny until your mouth gets accustom to it. But, it all works out, i promise you. Alot of money went into your teeth, dont mess around and chance screwing that up. And yes, 'sometimes' teeth over a period of time (if you dont wear it) can move and try to rotate again. BUT on the majority... they wont. But why risk it..... I wouldnt.

My son wore his retainer all the time for the first few years. Except to eat and swim (probably not a good idea for most sports anyway).

If they are loose or don't feel right, ask your ortho doctor to check the fit. Sometimes it takes a little while to get use to talking around them.

Yeah, I would think so. Only if you feel like your teeth are really moving would I wear it during the day. Congrats on your new smile!

I would wear it at night. But I would also call the dentist office and ask that question. I think everyone's dental problems are different. There should be a strong understanding between you and your dentist.
