Why do people who have only known you for 3 minutes ask you where you are from and need to know what side of town you live on? Never mind you haven't even invited them over so why would they even need to know? Why do bigots always have to put people in a box based on where they are from. And why do these same nosy people try to hide where they are from or avoid the question when asked themselves?

I am glad Irtneeski is not afraid to tell the truth. In the PAST that was a harmless question, however, our society is getting to hateful and is always looking for reasons to judge people. '

I ask people about the weather, the sports, outer space, bio-chemistry, never their personal life. I have class. Thank you.

So they can judge whether or not they are better than you

I think different people have different reasons for asking. Some people may want to find out if you are from the "wrong side" of town or not. Some people use it as an ice breaker. They don't have anything else to say or think that maybe they can break the ice if you have mutual friends from the same area. I come from a small southern town and allot of times the conversation will go like this, "Where do you live?" We have an area called Homeland Park that has the reputation as being the wrong side of town. Anyway, someone may say, Homeland park, and immediately the other person will say, I have a buddy named Santa that lives on Keys, do you know him? That's just an example. That is a conversation I have heard and had many times. Only the person asking knows their motives but around here, it seems to be more about finding out if you know the same people.

1. to get the conversation going
2. to see if you know anyone they know
3. They dont want to come over, just making small talk.
4. You know some bigots, have you been putting people in boxes.
5. Are they hiding where they are from or do they just think their life is boring.

I guess to see if there is anything in common. I had a car accident and it turned out the insurance adjuster lived a couple blocks from me. May not have made a difference but it seemed he was more willing to judge in my favor on the estimate.

I think it depends on where you are from. Maybe in some places they are trying to figure you out. But here in Los Angeles it is extremely common because the city is so spread out. We use it as an ice breaker. Come to think of it, I've never had anyone answer "West Adams" (aka the ghetto).

I've asked that q to women I just met....it's just to converse really......sometimes it seems like a harmless thing to ask a girl if you're trying to start a conversation.

So that they can put you in a box and judge you. Let's face it, the world is a judgemental place.

They think it is proper to strike up a conversation and they think where you live, yada yada yada is a safe subject. NOT, it is invasion of privacy
