The best piece of gear is one you will use. Really no matter how good the pieces are or what other people say you're the one using it. What will you use? Don't buy junk, spend the cash or look used for something of good quality. A good quality machine will be much more enjoyable to use.

That said, Don't forget a rowing machine, gives a full body workout more so then elliptical. And some $15 bands for resistance training.

And keep in mind it's not what you use but how you use it when you use it. The "fat burn" program burns less fat then a higher intensity session. The fat burn program is based on percentage of the calories burned. When at rest 90% of the cals used are from fat., but we only use 10 cals to sit. So when you work out if you burn 100 cals at 65% fat that's 65 fat cals but if you work at higher intensity and 40% cals of 200 total is 80 cals fat. Make sense?

Precor Elliptical is good, but a Cybex Arc Trainer is a completely zero-impact machine and totally awesome (especially it you get the one with arms that move too.)
