I am 18 and I am named after another man because he helped my mom when she was pregnant. My dad is not this man and my dad asked me did i want to change it and I have been thinking about it ever since then.

He seems really hurt when people ask me my name because he knows the guy and its not his just his last name.

Sounds like your father wants you to change it. I would only change it if you don't like the sound of your name or if it doesn't suit you. Sounds like your father has a personal problem with the guy you're named after...seems odd to me.

If your female, why bother? In a few years you'll be getting married, and odds are your last name will change anyway. If your male, that decision is totally yours. Don't let anyone make that decision for you. Obviously there was a reason your mom gave you a different last name than your biological father. Was he not involved in your life at that time? If not, does he now think he deserves to have a child with his last name? Give it lots of thought.

I would give this a lot of thought before doing this. After 18 years of having that name it never bothered you, then your father suggests it and now you're thinking about it. Do it to please yourself not anybody else, your last name shouldn't make your biological father hate/love you more for keeping/changing it. The choice is only yours and nobody else.

that is something very personal to you and only you can decide. My husband changed his name when he was 18. He took his stepfathers name. He was the one who raised him and was his "dad". He didn't do it sooner because then his sperm donor father wouldn't have had to pay child support. Do you have close connections with the man you are named for? Or are you now closer to your biological dad?

If your name didnt bother you before your dad asked about it, then I dont see reason to change it now. Sounds like HE wants you to change it. Think long and hard before you make that decision. It's your decision to make, and yours alone.
Maybe you should ask both your parents their opinion on the mattter. But the ultimate decision still remains YOURS....as well as the reasons for doing so.

if you change your name u will degrade the man who's actual you Daughter are. really its hurts as u feel very low for this but just rember do wht your hearts says. it works perfectly.
