The only answer that I think that u are going to get on here are opinions. I think that the best advice that you will get is in the link below. What 1 breed works for 1 family might not work for you. When getting a breed you need to take the good with the bad. For example, I have a German Short-hair Pointer, she is extremely smart, obedient, yet extremely stubborn at times and absolutely not well with children or other pets. I also have a beagle, she is stubborn, follows her nose, doesn't listen unless it involves food but she is great with kids and other pets. You also need to look at breed specifics, like Danes have little life spans and are susceptible to hip problems. So I hope that this helps you... Good Luck.

German Shepherd. Hands down. Extremely smart, trainable, loyal. They LIVE to please and they LOVE to learn. Get a puppy at 8 weeks old. Start training formally and informally as early as possible. Sirrus has an excellent puppy training class that doubles as great early dog socialization. I would also highly recommend a female vs a male. I have had shepherds, (have a shepherd now), and have owned and had a lot of contact with other large breed dogs and the german shepherd is by far, in my opinion, the best - again, for the reasons I stated above.

Though the study of dog intelligence that I'm pointing you to below was somewhat controversial, the poodle and german shepherd ranked at the top, while the mastiff was toward the bottom. The article did not mention great danes, however, though I'm sure they're in the book.

april k gave you the best advice of all. I even went to the link although I've been a cat person what seems forever. (I gave you a thumbs up, april k!) I had a book on the most intelligent dogs, but can't find it. The WORK dogs, sheep dogs---especially the Hungarian Puli. But if you want a large breed, that's another matter. There are so many things to consider when looking for the dog best suited to YOU. A Puli puppy was given to me many years ago--he was the brightest, most loving, affectionate, loyal, well behaved dog I've ever known. Gentle, too, & VERY protective. My best friend for 17 years. I hope you find a dog you'll love ...

A pure bred German Shepherd...not messy, big (my male weighs over 100#), and very loving, but protective of the members of the household. With no help from me, he graduated at the top of his obedience class. He loves children, who can do almost anything to him and if one happens to fall asleep on him, he lays there until they wake up! We trained him in simple German commands (in any German Shepherd book), so that he responds to only us. This is a wonderful breed! I would never be without one...but I only purchase from reliable and well recommended breeders. Our dog was $700 when we purchased him 4 years ago. Good luck and go German!

I think Retrievers and Shepards are very smart when it comes to being work dogs and their loyalty to man. I had a Golden and a Chocolate Lab and they were both good dogs. Shepards are good too but territorial. That's why the Police, the blind, and the DEA use these breeds.

The Border Collie comes in first as far as intelligence. 2nd is the Standard Poodle.
I have a Standard and I admit he is very smart. Very quick to learn. But since they are such smart dogs, you need to constantly keep their minds stimulated by teaching them new things. Otherwise, they will get bored.
