To become a Buddhist, you would want totake refuge in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha ( the Buddha, his teachings and his entourage of enlightened disciples)
- to be a Buddhist, there are NO commandments, just guidelines to live as a benevolent person who practices Compassion for all.
- a violent "Buddhist" is already not a Buddhist. If a person lives in a way of Peace, Non-Violence and Benevolence, they are already following the Buddha's path
- If you make a mistake, don't worry... Buddha is NOT gonna strike you with a Brimstone of Fire from Heaven for disobeying him, the Buddha's way is for us all to be responsible for our own actions and decisions. He taught that whatever we do, we will receive the same result, Jesus taught the same thing too he said You sow what you reap. So... just get up and try again... Buddhist believe in the multiple life times theory
- A buddhist believes in tolerance of others and respect for their choices, beliefs and cultures. A buddhist doesnt go around imposing their will on others but instead gently invite them to grow.
- Buddhist DO NOT convert per se, but they serve to make a Christian to be a better Christian, A Hindu to be a better hindu, a muslim to be a better muslim and an atheist to be a more benevolent person.
If you are already living according to even ONE of the above, you have already put one foot on to the Buddha's Path of Loving-Kindness and Compassion.

From what I know, Buddhists don't go to regular organized service in the way a christian church does every sunday. I've bought some books on Buddhist philosophies and meditation methods. If you need more guidance, look up Buddhist temples around your area on the internet. Ask to speak with someone about your needs and the temple people will direct you to a monk who will help you on your way to enlightenment.
Also, some of the Buddhist temples will ask for monetary contributions but I have never done so. Some of the temples will have a sunday service, but all you need to offer in return is a gesture in thankfulness, like a flower, or an apple, or a clear sound of a bell.

(Refer to Tiara's answer immediately above mine. She speaks very eloquently about Buddhism.)
Buddhism is a system of thinking and practice. The general concepts can be found everywhere. Books by Thich Nhat Hanh or Stephen Batchelor make good introductions. (Batchelor is an advocate for secular Buddhism). If you prefer the philosophical approach, Jon Kabat-Zinn's book "Wherever you go, there you are" is an excellent choice.
You may also look in the telephone book or online for nearby Buddhist meditation centers. There may be workshops to study or regular groups that you can join to learn more.
Good luck.

you can become Buddhist by saying in true spirit like
I take refuge in Buddha,
I take reefuge in dhamma teachings of Buddha,
I take refuge in sanga organization of Buddha,
This is the way how to become a Theravada Buddhism.
In Theravada Buddhism, we only take refuge and trust in Buddha,Dhamma and sanga organization, unlike mahayana and zen.
Mahayana and zen believes and traust in other future Buddhas
and 'nut' and many others.
