If you feed a high quality food both the cat and kitten can eat it and that solves the problem.
"Kitten" food, "hairball" food, "lite" food, "Senior" food are all marketing ploys and have nothing to do with the quality of the food.
Try Natural Balance, Solid Gold (Katzen Flocken), Eagle Pack, Nature's Variety, Life's Abundance, CA Natural (most expensive). Wellness.
These foods get their protein from human-grade meat sources, chicken, lamb, duck etc. and use brown rice as filler. They are much healthier for both your cats.
So there is no problem. To switch dry cat foods click on my name at the icon and follow the "recipe" for successfully converting the cats.

We had the problem quite a while ago and want to know how old is the cat and how old is the kitten? Maybe you might feed the cat on the cats schedule and have a time different for the kitten. Kittens will adapt to this easier than full grown cats. Also an idea since the kitten needs to have food as much and often as possible, maybe a different room for the kitten until the kitten is much older. You know I find it easy to talk to kittens, as they are all about curiosity, and understand better. You should have talked with you full grown before bringing a kitten home. Leave the cats food where it is and when you find the kitten there, pit it up and say no, and take it where you chose to feed the kitten so it knows.

try feeding your kitten in a small room like a bathroom and letting your cat eat out in the kitchen. Feed your adult cat only about 13-1/4 of a cup and leave it down for 30mins. After 30 mins pick it up. Even if he hasn't eaten it. Do the same for him at night. Now with your kitten, do the same thing, but more often. Feed your kitten about 1/3 of a cup 3 -4times daily. Pick it up after 30mins. All the while keeping the cats separate. Once the kitten gets switched over to adult food then you won't need to worry as much, but it's a good idea to keep doing that because it reduces the likelyhood of obesity in cats. Also, if your cats don't eat it right away don't be worried, they will eat when they are hungry enough. Goodluck, cats can be very stubborn.

Ha ha. If you figure this out let me know. I have two cats, but one's fat and needs diet food, and the other is skinny and needs regular food. Between them preferring the other's food, and whichever is more convenient for them at the time, I can never keep them out of each other's bowls. I even feed twice a day in separate locations. Even just now, Rumblebum went and started picking at Fluffball's food.

Feed them in separate rooms. Its a bummer, but it has to be done at least until both are eating their own food without a fuss. This is also what you would do when one cat is stealing the other cat's food.

Try switching to an all life stages food that way you can feed both the same food. Canidae makes a good cat food for all life stages.

Good luck! I just bought a cat litter box tonight with a top on it, and put the cats food in it, because I'm sick of the dogs eating the cats food!

Just put each cat's name on the bowl. Then they will know who's is who's. How else are they going to figure it out? Sheez.
