Hard to say. Proclaiming you were an atheist was like sentencing yourself to death (still is in some places) for a long time. People who contributed to society may not have felt comfortable proclaiming their atheism. Even today, atheists are viewed with a certain amount of skepticism and suspicion, so most of us don't go advertising ourselves. Which is not the case with religious people. And please remember that there are lots of "shades" of Christians. Most contributions have probably been made by people who belong to some sort of religious denomination, but are not particularly zealous. As far as fundamentalist Christians go, I doubt they've contributed anything worthwhile, and in fact have probably brought us backwards.

Ah...the believers and the non believers, what does it matter, neither seem to be doing too great a job right now. But in the end or what we call the end, one will come out on the top. But actually you see my friend......there can be no atheist, for they do believe in something they just don't call it God. But they have a believe even if its their UNBELIEF, which in all reality the Atheist would not exist without God. For what would they NOT believe in.

Bill Gates and Warren Buffet donated more money to help people than any in world history. One is an agnostic, the other an atheist. Case closed.

EDIT: "who started most hospitals, universities and even this country? Christians did. Who started the movement to end slavery in the US and Britain? Christians. "
Who tells people not to use condoms and encourages the spread of STDs? Christians do. Who started the slave trade? The Judeo-Christian Cult.

Both have made contributions to the world. I will note however, that it is usually inspite of Christianity and the church, not with it's blessings.

I think Christians. They have brought love and understanding to the world. I don't like to brag about myself. I don't keep a running total on what I do. I do things because it's the right thing to do.

I have to say that your question should be presented from the other direction. Who has made it worse? The answer for that would be Christians.

What you contribute in life has nothing to do with if you believe in God or not, it has to do with the type of human being you are. So that being said, what do you contribute to life?
