the only symptom I'd be most concerned is the grunting when he breathes. Constipation is common and our nearly 3-year-old is classic for holding it back. She'll often say it hurts, but will go eventually. (We give her the Gerber prune/apple juice). Slight fever is normal... but like I said, the grunting I'd be concerned. Grunting like pushing out bowels? Grunting like in pain?
I'd keep an eye on him overnight... and take him in the am to the MD unless the grunting gets worse. Then I'd take him to a urgent care pediatrician... and lastly the ER. Usually there is no pediatrician in the ER... and the wait is terrible - especially with a sick toddler.
Also... get onto www.webmd.com. Check his symptoms and follow their advice. I've found this website very helpful int he past.
Good luck!

The grunting can be from the fever called labour breathing or he can be in breathing distress.Forget about the bowel movement for now and concentrate on his breathing,If his ribs is sucking in with each breath,if his nostrils flare with each breath or if he is breathing over 30 times a minute take him to the emergency room now.If none of those things is going on check his breathing after fever is gone.If no bowel movement by tomarrow the get advice from his pediatrician.Good luck.

If it was just a poopie issue I wouldn't be concerned but accompanied by fever and grunts, I would say take him to the ER right away.
Once you are sure that it is not anything serious, and whenever he is having trouble going to the bathroom, give him some prune juice or one or two prunes to eat, along with lots of water. It's safe and natural, a little warm water always worked for my daughter too.
Good Luck... Let us know how he is. :-)

I'd take him to the doctor just to make sure there's nothing serious going on. Also, I'd lay off the apple juice. It causes gas, which will probably make him more uncomfortable. Peaches, pears, and prunes are best for relieving constipation. But, honestly, what you're describing sounds a little strange. Better safe than sorry- call the doctor.

I would give him prune juice or grapes. Make sure he avoids Bananas, and milk. I am not sure if Apple juice is the right thing either. He may have an impaction so you may want to call the doctor to see what you can give a 2 yr old for constipation and if it doesn't work then he may need to be looked at.
Also if you find that milk products bind him up switch to soy milk I get the vanilla silk soy and my boys love it.

My 2 year is going thru that same thing.
Our pediatrician said to give him about a teaspoon of Benefiber a couple times a day. With Benefiber the worst you can go is give your little one really loose bowels. Benefiber is all natural and won't hurt him.
Also cut back on the milk as milk constipates the little guys. Also we give our little one White Grape juice that works better than apple juice. When he makes it to day 5 with out a poop that is when you need to take him to the doctor.
Good luck I know what you are going thru.
PS - my little one grunts to the point when he is pushing it sounds like he will puke. I video taped his episode and took it with us to the pediatrician and he said that is what they do when they are constipated very badly.

He needs to go potty go and buy him some suppository NOW hold it in for a few minutes and it should help him have a bowel and it should help reduce the fever as well. The Suppositories come in two sizes infant and adult if there is no infants just cut a bit off of the END of the adult, it is the same thing just Glycerin. Tylenol should help. Give him lots of water O.J. and he really should go tho the Doctor A.S.A.P.
NO: BANANAS, BREAD, RICE, NOTHING STARCHY

My daughter had a similar problem to this last year and I gave her some diluted prune juice (only a small amount) and fed her more fruit than usual...also make sure he is drinking plenty of water. You could possibly try giving him a warm bath to help soothe any wind (like with babies) I don't know but its worth a try. If he is really uncomfortable and his fever gets any worse I would definately see a doctor. Hope this helps.

Your son could very well be teething also if he do not have all of his back teeth. As for him not pooping yet, try giving him the necessary liquids. Do not give him things like milk or cheese which seems to harden his poop. If he do not go by tomorrow, call the pediatrician and see if its okay to give him a suppository for relief. Oh and try Motrin for his fever.
