I've been grinding my teeth alot more than usual in the last week or so, I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to prevent this from happening or atleast make it less painful. I have tried useing a mouth gaurd for wrestleing that forms to your teeth, but it made it hard to fall asleep and it hurt my gums. I've been grinding my teeth and clenching my jaw for a real long time, but it's not constant it's off and on. I don't know why it happens, but it's starting to really hurt alot during the day and when I'm eating. So if anyone has a solution or anything I really appreciate it alot.

BRUXISM is what you suffer from. Commonly this problem gets relieved after deworming, which is to be repeated after a fortnight. You may also like to go this site:http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/bruxism/DS00337/DSECTION=1

Best wishes.

I'm a Dental Assistant, my suggestion would be...Go to your local dentist and get a 'night splint' ..some call it a 'night guard'. You can either get a soft or hard guard/splint. It works... helps on the aching jaw and teeth pain and the sensitivity. It's money well spent. I have one, and to be honest with you i'm so grateful i did. I sleep comfortably.. better than ever now. I have a soft guard, by the way. It's less rough on the gum tissues.

All the dentist will do, is give you a limited exam and (sometimes) take a 'panaramic' x'ray view of your teeth/jaw. IF they see cause and reasonings for a splint/guard, they will take impressions of your upper and lower teeth. It's just a putty like material, used to take/make molds or models of your teeth. Some offices make these splints in the office.. and some offices send them out to labs to have them made. Either way.. its worth it, i assure you!

*Most Dental Insurances, acknowledge this treatment and pay for it. And 'some' Medical Insurances, will acknowledge this treatment and will pay a percentage for it.

Tell your dentist. He/she may be able to fit you with an appliance similar to "invisalign" braces. It will act like a mouthguard and be much more comfortable. I used to be a lab tech for a dentist and I recall making these for a patient who was a "night grinder." She'd still grind, but this way, she wore down the plastic insert instead of her teeth. They could also fit you with a device similar to a bionator without a key (your dentist will know what that is), but it would probably be as annoying as a mouthguard. But that would probably keep you from grinding your teeth. Good luck!

Yes,it is related to Stress. When you are stressed out,you grind your teeth. If you do it in your sleep, there is not much you can do,except wearing your night guard.Take it back to the dentist to fix it,so that you can wear.It takes a week the most to get used to it.You really have to wear it.I've seen people suffer because of grinding. You might break your teeth, you can have terrible headaches and many problems with your jaw.So really make an effort to get used to it,that's the only way..I broke some filings and the last one cost me 2 grand to fix it.

My mother has the same situation. Are you wearing a plastic mouthgard? She uses a flexible, but form-fitting mouthgard and wears it to bed each night. The material its made out of is that of, lets say, a gusher (the candy), or a squishy ball. Its very comfortable. She says it keeps the damage of grinding your teeth to a lesser point, but she doesn't feel any pain. I'd suggest that if you haven't tried it already, and if you have, I would see your dentist. I'm postive there are devices out there that can help you.

Go to your dentist, there are much better professionally fit guards you can put in. Plus, maybe its your lifestyle. Do you have a lot of stress during the day that's carrying over? How about too much sugar and caffeine before bedtime?

You can buy nightguards (you mold it yourself) at most drug stores.

It's A LOT cheaper - and just as good - as what the dentist will fit you with. As for the difficulty in falling asleep...well, you just get used to it. I found it hard at first, but you get used to it after a while...

The newer type of appliances go on just the front teeth and are less annoying. It is called an "NTI" . Call and ask your dentist about it.
