I think the notion that English food is bland still relates to the time after World War 2 when food was still rationed, and bulk was more important than flavour.
These days, there is so much choice, vegetables don't get cooked for hours on end till they change to a green sludge, we appreciate meat that is juicy and rare, and not cooked to a boot-sole.
I think English food does have the potential to be bland, but only if cooked badly. A well cooked Sunday Roast, tender beef, beautiful roast potatos cooked in a little duck fat, beautiful savoy cabbage, roast parsnips, cauliflower, sweet garden peas, real gravy from the beef juices.... Corrrrrrr!!

I think that Phish is right. For years British restaurants were pretty grim, but there was always lots of very tasty home cooking. Nowadays, people travel abroad more and their expectations are higher so restaurants simply had to improve. I just wish that there were more independent family restaurants here, serving food that was really cooked on the premises. There is a lot of very dodgy "Home Cooked Food" or, even worse, "Home Cooked Fayre" out there which doesn't do much for our culinary reputation. Gary Rhodes' "New British Classics" is an excellent book for anyone who wants to know how real British Food should be cooked.

No - English food isn't bland! I don't think there is such a thing as "English" food anymore - like us, the food is multicultural. After all, a recent survey showed that fish 'n' chips is no longer the favourite national dish - it's curry. Doesn't that say something about being bland?

Some people just haven't actually tried english food. All the tourists seem to think that because they've eaten in a pub called "The English Pub", that they are suddenly experts on english food (and beer for that matter).... The fact that "The English Pub" is owned by German couple and is situated on the outskirts of Hamburg just doesn't seem to weigh anything on their answers!!

It is well known amongst the best chefs that all the best produce comes from Scotland. I have heard of that restaurant - is that the heathen place that has the cheek to serve a "Porrige of Snails" as a starter. As a French friend (chef) used to say - what a load of sheet.!!

It isn't so much that the food is particularly bland. It's more that there is a lack of variety. Of course there is a lot of awesome Indian food, but in terms of actual British food, it's just sandwiches sandwiches sandwiches. Just pub food, halal, and goddamn sandwiches.

English food is the best in the world. But we've been infiltrated by outsider junk (McDonalds, Burger King etc.)
