Yes. It is a good base if you plan to travel around a bit on the railway. From there you can go up the mountain to Wengen (nicer, smaller town to stay in) and then up to Jungfrauloch. Or down to Interlaken, then on to Lake Brienz. Get a rail pass then you can travel all over by rail and cable car.

Lauterbrunnen is in a pretty valley and you can go on lovely walks next to the river, counting the waterfalls as you go.

i have visited many places in switzerland, but i never went to lauterbrunnen. i don't even know where that is.

My guess is yes; because it shows up in my cache on the railroad site www.rail.ch but I have to say it doesn't ring any bells.
