I have had and bred Newfies for 16 years. They are a wonderful breed. They do slobber, drip water everywhere, give off a lot of hair, need a lot of grooming, carry expensive vet bills, and not live as long as many other breeds.
HOWEVER, they are great with kids, cats, other dogs, highly trainable, like to swim, pull carts,do not eat much, and do not require a ton of exercise.
The coat requires some grooming, they should NEVER be shaved, but a brushing twice a week is all that is needed. They like the cold, and hate the heat.
The are rather expensive to acquire, and should ONLY be obtained through a good breeder. There are a lot of health problems in the breed and all breeding stock should be screened for hip, elbow, heart, and cystenuria. All puppies should see a BOARD CERTIFIED CARDIOLOGIST before going to the new homes. The heart defect,SAS, can cause a dog/puppy to drop dead very early.

They are a wonderful breed. I could never have another breed and will always have at least one Newf. They are not for everyone though.
Temperment is the hallmark of the breed and a Newf should never have a bad temperment. So important it is, that our breed standard begins there.

I had a combination newfoundland and lab he was about 110lbs and the one of the best dogs I could ask for I live in the country and when people saw him they did not bother me but he was ever so gentle and loved the water.

Yes I did and he was a wonderful dog. Loved kids and had a harness so he could pull kids on sleds in the winter time. He was a very enthusiastic dog in obedience, so much so that people used to wait for him to knock me over on the recall because he came at full speed and always looked like he wouldn't be able to stop in time!

Also very dog friendly - he lived with a bunch of afghans. The only problem he had was thinking he could jump clear over the coffee table like the afghans did!

If you're thinking of getting one, make sure you get one from a reputable breeder because the breed can have heart problems.

Our neighbor has a Newfoundland. He is absolutely enormous! He must weigh at least 100 pounds. When I was babysitting our friend's five-year-old, we came into the backyard to find the dog there. He bounded up to the kid and almost knocked him over in an attempt to say hello! It really freaked him out, but the dog meant well.
Newfoundlands are usually sweet and lovable, but they can be hard to handle. Our neighbor is in her sixties and is not strong enough to walk her dog as it's almost as tall as she is and weighs about the same.

yes we had a newfie when i was young. He is not a good dog for young kids and is very hairy. They also need a lot of room for running and exercise since they are so large. They are definitly not apartment dogs by any means. They shed all the time and can make the prettiest of houses ugly with all of the black hair. Don't get me wrong they are great dogs for people who know how to take care of them. Also, take into consideration that they grow to over 125lbs usually.

Newfies are excellent companion dogs. They are great for a family, but they are extremely LARGE. They also require a nice sized yard for exercise. Check out www.dogbreedinfo.com for more info.

I don't have one but have groomed many. They are wonderful dogs. Very even tempered and good with children. I have never had one snap at me and seldom heard one bark.

Very mild mannered. His name was Clancy. He was the best dog I ever had. Lazy, liked to sleep, clumsy. He would take his leash and walk him self. seriously. when you put it on him he would take it out of your hands and carry it in his mouth. like he was walking himself. he didn't know how big he was and would just take over. very mild mannered and very lovable. great dogs.

There is a reason that they are called "Gentle Giants"

Just get use to carring a "slobber towell" with you at all times.

They are wonderful (but very large) dogs. They are pretty laid back and low key.
