we didn't find a stinger, but noticed it after we went for a walk, so figured it was an insect bite. we are worried how severe the reaction might be, but her breathing seems good. she is tired from the allergy med, and she feels warm to the touch, which may be normal after a bite, i don't know. if anyone has any other ideas what this is or how to treat it, we're certainly open. thanks!

Yep! Hematoma!

It needs to be drained. I Drain my Labs and Belgian Malinois all the time. If you don't drain, it won't hurt, but the blood will become dry and stiff and cause a deformed ear...shrinking, etc...

Better off getting it checked by Vet.

This is probably not an insect bite, rather a blood pocket formed from excessive shaking of the head due to ticks/fleas, or riding in a car or truck with the wind consistently blowing back the ears. My Elkhound had this happen to his ear and I finally took him to a vet. He had to cut it open, drain it and stitch it up. It left him with a crumpled ear, but he lived for three more years.

She might have what's called a hematoma. It happens when the dog shakes the head too hard. Little blood vessels break in the ear and caise a swelling because if blood collecting. It should be looked at by a vet to make sure that's what it is.

Usually it is a hematoma, basically they can shake their ears and it will cause a artery to rupture, if this is what it is the vet can drain it if it is a allergy or insect bite they can give them a cortizone shot.

If the bite is severe enough the dog can get whats called a Colliflour ear. It`s more common in cats but dogs get it to and there is nothing a vet can do about it.

do you have lots of bees where you walked? i had a dog once that was stung by a bee and had a reaction to it. allergy meds dose help some, but you dog may need to go to the vet and get a shot to make it go away! i didn't find a stinger ether! if it dose not get a shot it can get very sick!!!
lots of luck!!!!

Your dog sounds like she has a hematoma. This occurs when the blood vessels break in the ear. it generally needs to be surgically repaired. if left alone it may deform the ear flap.

I can't remember exactly, but my beagle had the same thing when I was growing up. I don't recall it being very serious but I do think it is some type of infection that needs medication.
