I've lived in NYC my entire life without incident.

Is it ok to go shopping or walking with a backpack in Manhattan? Absolutely, I do it all the time. But keep in mind there are random searches on the subway by the police. And when you board the subway train, be sure to place the backpack in front of you just to be safe.

Despite what people may think, NYC is a very safe city -- just be alert. Be sure to get a subway map when you get here. You can also check it out online before you arrive at the MTA's website: http://www.mta.info/. Be sure to get an unlimited metrocard for your stay so you can take the subway/bus around the city.

Unless you're planning on walking around at 4am, NYC is not scary to walk around in. There are 8 million people in New York, there are always people out and about.

Have a great trip!

You can wear anything you want in NYC and look normal...but jeans and a decent top would be best for shopping. Bring a decent fall weight coat...not too heavy. It isnt winter temp yet.

You can walk with a pack of people if that is what you mean, but the closer you get to the holidays, the more crowded the city gets. 5th ave is crazy.

I feel safe everywhere in Manhattan. And if you are with other people dont worry about it. My advice, dont take the subway after midnight alone...or even with one other. It gets shady down there.

the weather here in October is very odd. like this week for example.. it was 80 degrees yesterday and today it was like 65. but probably by the 19-25th, it'll stay pretty much the same and be cold, in like the 50s. check weather.com before your trip to see the forecasts.

New York City is a VERY safe city, considering the size. it's like the 4th safest city in the nation. so, is it ok to walk with a backpack? yeah, but cops may check it at the subway stations. and what areas should you not go to... you should see as much as you can. have a great trip!

You can definitely shop walking in dressing Jeans. The weather here is great! Around 50 - 70 degrees. Don't go to the South Bronx (except for Yankees Stadium), Lower East Side, and some of the ghetto places in Brooklyn.

I would not wear a pack in NYC, although crime is down, you may tempt someone to reach inside" and steal something, especially on a crowded subway or bus. Try to get a seat at the front of the bus, you can see where you are going, and ask questions of the bus driver.

For your first time here, don't wander around alone, take one of the big red tour buses. I don't know if there are boat trips around the island, this time of year, if so, there are brochures at your hotel.

Joe Allen's is a nice place to eat, you may see a celebrity.
Do not go to Central Park alone, day or night! Get a map of Manhattan.

If you go to a Broadway show, try go to a matinee. If you go to an evening show, take a taxi to your hotel, don't walk by yourself. Taxis are expensive!
