And old, old, Gaelic tradition where by in order to mix jam berries (jam being made of berries and all) the men of the orchards would roll the barrels down a slight incline, whilst balancing on top (now more often performed as a trick in a circus).
This rolling would not only serve to mix, crush, and separate the contained berries, but was also often actually regarded as an aphrodisiac; and the younger men would spend many hours trying to perfect this technique to impress the ladies.

Well a jam roll is a pastry rolled up around jam...But, in musical turms....much more interesting, it is a bunch of people getting together, and jamming, i.e. freeforming, and I think the roll comes into it because of the rock n roll, wich is boring, but jazz jam rolls are wonderful... especially the drum roll

it is white bread with the crust cut off that has jam spred on it and rolled up. It can be served as an hors d-orve or as a full roll for one to take their own portion. Pastry is not normally used.

if you're speakingin literal terms its a layer of sponge or bread spread with jam and rolled up then eaten, but if you mean colloquially then "jam roll" is a cockney slang term for "dole" or social security benefits

Used to be called a Swiss roll. Strangely enough I haven't been able to buy a Swiss roll baking try in Switzerland.
How do you make a Swiss roll?
