You just have to keep putting him down and shouting "no, bad dog, get down" and just keep doign it, eventually he'll stop and start again later but keep at it and he should learn to get the picture. Also it would help if he had his own bed somewhere, that he knows is his, if he has a comfy spot to nap in, he'll be more prone to go there first instead of your bed.

If you want to keep your dog off the furniture, there are a few things that you can do to help break the habit.

1) Soda Can Penny Shaker

Take an empty soda can and put a few coins inside. Everytime the dog gets on the furniture, shake it loudly and pull him off the furniture. Repeat, repeat, repeat. You need to be persistent. Once he associates the furniture with the horrible noise, he should refrain from climbing up onto it.

2) Spikey mat. This is particularly helpful if your dog has 1 or 2 favorite spots. You can use a plastic floor protector typically seen in offices, under the office chairs. They have pointy plastic teeth on the underside, which are extremely uncomfortable. Simply place the mat upside down on the furniture you wish to keep dog free.

3) Dog bed. Does he/she have one? The dog might be choosing your furniture because he doesn't have doggie furniture of his own. (BJ's Wholesale club has very nice dog beds for only $30. My two labs love them).

Hope this helps.

How long has the dog been sleeping on the furniture? Is it ALL the furniture, or are you just concerned about the marital bed? You need to enlist your husband to help you. The dog needs to understand that the bed belongs to you and your spouse; and that the floor (or other designated place) is for him. EVERY time he gets on the bed, physically push him off and tell him "no". He will learn quickly. But if your spouse allows it, even sometimes, you will never succeed. The dog will not understand that sometimes it's ok and not others. Either it is ok. or it's not. Be firm. Be consistent. And NEVER compromise on the marital bed, that allows the dog to be equal to or above you in the hierarchy of the pack.

The dog does this becuase he is the alpha. You need to do as said above tell him no and cont to place him on the floor. Shut the door so he cannot go into the room and consider a crate. Place the dog in the crate for certain increments of time and eventually at night. They consider it a den and since they are pack animals are comfortable in it. Take your place as well as your husband taking him and be the alphas

If he has always been allowed on the furniture the only way you are going to keep him off is to buy new and keep him off of it from the moment it comes into the house (and that might not work if you are not consistent).

We allow our dogs to get on the rec room furniture, but when we bought stuff for our living room we never let them on it and they have stayed off with very little trouble... Good luck....

u need to get the dog a dog bead and put it near your bed so that the dog is still close to u while it sleeps. u should also try to keep the dog off the bed at all hours of the day and make sure that he knows that it isnt right to be up on the bed i would also try to make your dog as comforable. well good luck.

Obedience training will do the trick, try giving the dog something to occupy it, like a plastic bottle with some treats inside. Leave the lid off to give it half a chance to get the treats out. Good luck

Check out the "Dog Whisperer", Cesar Milan, on the National Geographic channel or you can check out his website for tips. His main "thing", is that owners need to be calm assertive to create a calm submissive dog.
He's great! I watch his show and I don't even have a dog! :-)

they sell this like plastic spike mats to put on furniture like couches, and the dog wont go up. eventually you can take them off and they will know not to go on. My 75 pound boxer loves to sleep on my bed(on top of my legs) and on the furniture.

you cant teach an old dog new tricks. He was there before you. Kind of like a step child. Get him his own chair and get you a bigger bed
