This really depends on the type of personality you want the dog to have. Are you looking for a dog that will stay cute, cuddly and puppy-like for years? Are you looking for a hunting dog? I am most familiar with the first type. These are generally called toy breeds. These dogs rarely get more than 10 to 15 pounds and can be easily carried. They are full of energy and can really be like a child. I am particularly partial to toy poodles and Japanese Chins. Both are highly intelligent and love to play.

It should be a dog that is suited to the climate of the place where you live. Secondly must be easy to maintain. Third, it should have been bred properly, by which I mean it should not have been inbred for it makes it prone to many genetic defects. Fourth, you (or someone) must have time to take care of your dog even if it is for a few minutes per day esp., if you are away from home for long..

Get a shitzu, they are considered a small dog, which makes them easy to care for. They have hair, not fur...you actually wash their hair in people shampoo, and because they have hair they are great for people with allergies, because they do not shed. They are good tempered with children, and other animals and they are not yappy. I have a friend that breeds them, and I think they are the perfect family dog.

Well, depending on who you are, where you live etc...??
My favorite dogs are English sheepdogs, beagles, dobermans, golden retrievers, and Samoyeds. They're all GREAT dogs; and all suited to different climates: take your pick!!! If you want a smaller dog: Cocker Spaniel.
