YOur Doctor should be monitoring your Bp frist weekly and then monthly.
Your are over weight mostlikely and should take this as a wake up call.
Your body is telling you something and you are not listening..
Change some of your eating habits cut out salt and go of a 30minute walk everyother or every night... Take one of your kids, wife or pet.
Atenolol is not cheep by any meeds. the older you get the worst it gets.
Bp hepertention is caused by a number of things but a better way of understanding is learning and taking control.
How bad was your blood pressure for that kind of dose???

118kilos is a lot. Try and loose some weight. Of the beta blockers, atenolol is a member of the family, the daily cost towards the middle. The cheapest is propanolol, but it does have more side effects. Your goal bp is a systolic below 140 and diastolic below 90.
Your medication is odd, but standard drug therapy has a patient start with a thiazide diuretic.

I would recommend this website: http://www.drmcdougall.com
You really need to get healthy before it's too late. The meds will not cure you of anything. A good diet/exercise program will do wonders. If I can do it, so can you. If you're not diabetic now, you are heading in that direction. Unfortunately, I waited too long to take care of myself and ended up paying the price. But I've lost all the weight and the diabetes isn't nearly the problem it was. Plus, I look better and feel better now that I've shed all those pounds and am eating healthy foods.

Atenolol should keep your hypertension under control. Also, unless you're very very very tall - you are significantly overweight. Losing weight by eating healthier will have a HUGE impact on how you feel and how quickly you get your blood pressure under control.
