Very simple. No, you cannot. There is no state in the Union that allows private citizens to own an automatic weapon.
That was easy, wasn't it?

I can only tell you that you could a few years ago, one of my friends bought a machine gun...he had to apply for a special license and it took some time to get the license. However there were restrictions on it. Each time he wanted to fire it, he needed to advise the police and be escorted to and from the firing range. He fired it about three times, then sold it....it was too expensive as it ate up bullets too fast...and he re-loaded his own! But with the current terrorist threats, etc. the laws may have changed. An AK-47 is technically not a machine gun but it is automatic. I don't like them as the crack of the weapon hurts my ears...it is very distinctive. In Vietnam, we could distinguish an enemy rifle from sound only. The AK-50 is a machine gun. There are a number of AK-47s in the US. Check some of the gun dealers on the web and they can advise how to get a license...remember it is not easy...FBI checks, etc as well as local laws apply.

yes you can it is very hard to get you licence for is and the licence is just per say there is no licence just alot of $$$ involved, you have to fill out alot of paper work have a spotless police record, getting caught with pot or a dui can x you out for life, you have to fill out paper work and get a tax stamp, the only draw back is they are horrably expensive, a new colt semi auto m-16(ar-15) will cost u about $1,300 a used solt fully automatic will cost you $16,000 dollars, and the guy who said you cant own one in any state in the union has told you a fib you can and any state in the union with the proper documentation, and the girl who said her husband converts them all the time? you have to have a licenced tranferable wepon for that or it is a felony and a serious one at that if hes caught thats ten years in the federal pen, i hope this was inforative, oh yea and you can own a fully auto ak they dont make those transferable in the usa

Okay, almost everyone on here is incorrect as I have owned many fully automatic weapons.
First of all you are allowed almost any type of gun, excluding several that are excluded under Federal & State laws.
The National Firearms Act of 1934 allowed U.S. citizen certain rights, in regards to extraordinary firearms, such as Military & Law Enforcement type weapons. Since it is our Constitutional right to own firearms, the Government decided to set up certain guidlines that would insure that these weapons would not be falling into the hands of fellons.
Weapons that you can legally own by purchasing a stamp and registering through the BATF, by way of the 1934 NFA Act.
* Fully Automatic Weapons (Machineguns)
AK-47, MP-5, M-16, P-90, etc.
* Short barrel rifles (under 16" barrells)
Uzi, M4, MP-5, P-90
* Short barrel shotguns (under 16" barrells)
Tactical Shotguns
* Suppresors / Silencers for both pistols &
carbines
All of the above weapons are considered Class 3 weapons and must be purchased and cleared through a class 3 dealer.
Upon purchase (in full) the dealer will fill out his/her portion of the paper work and pass it on to the transferee (You the purchaser). Than it is your responsibilty to have local law enforcement (Police of Chief, County Sherrif, etc., etc., etc.. There's a whole list of LEO Law Enforcement Officers) that can perform this (see BATF), run an extensive background check and sign of on your BATF NFA Form, verifying that your not a known felon (from a local LEO's perspective).
Than you need to either have local Law Enforcement pull your fingerprints on a certified FBI Print Card.
Than take your signed off BATF NFA Form with all applicable signatures in duplicate, along with (2) copies of your fingerprints (usual cost $10.00 to $15.00 per card), along with a check in the amount of $200.00 for your tax stamp that will eventually arrive back with your completed Form from the ATF.
The ATF can take up to six months to process your request (there's no set time limit). They will also do a background check, but on a federal level . . . FPI, CIA, interpol. If everything comes up clear and they determine that your a good, law abiding citizen, they'll go ahead and process your paperwork. Keep in mind they'll take their sweet time on it too.
Once your NFA form arrives back at your class 3 dealer, the dealer will notify you ove rthe phone that your form has cleared and your free to pick up your class 3 weapon.
Keep in mind (VERY IMPORTANT), the NFA form with the affixed tax stamp must be kept with it's appropriate weapon at all times, even when it's in your gun safe.
Remember gun laws can change from day to day. I make sure that I'm an expert on whatever day/s I make a gun transaction or register a gun.
So, if you are intending to make such a purchase and lawfully register the weapon with all of the paperwork required by law, I would strongly suggest that you check with the ATF just before purchasing. Your class 3 dealer can almost always answer any questions you may have, but ultimetly you're responsible not the dealer. So, cover your (donkey) and make the call. Most ATF agents are more than happy to help you. Just don't joke around with 'em!
Another point to consider, very few ranges allow full auto fire. If your machinegun has select fire, you can fire it one shot at a time, but that's about it. Some allow them, but they're rare. Best deal is if you live out in the country or the country's a short drive for you. Be sure to check with that Counties Law Enforcement before you go, though.
Good Luck and start saving your money. You're going to need it to pay for all of that wasted ammo your going to spew everywhere.

With a Federal permit, yes. They used to be about $300.00 a year some years back, probably costs more now. Check with the ATF
Amazing, looking at the other answers how many people are clueless... ;-)

It requires at least a special federal license from the BATF. It's possible to get one, but I don't know what the requirements are (like for a federal dealer's license), so you may want to contact an attorney in your area specializing in such (if you'er serious).

Yes you can.
It takes a federal permit and you get the pleasure of paying a large sum of money for it. They also do a background check.
