Yes, you have to purchase it in a state that allows Class 3 firearms (Machine guns). Two such states are Ohio and Nevada. Be prepaired to pay the 450.00 transfer tax and it has to be paid every 3 years, to the Federal Government

Interesting to note, that machine guns are not accurate, expensive to feed, and frankly are a pain in the butt.

The AK series while very robust, is not very accurate

Yeah, the background check that a person goes through makes the Patriot Act look like carding a person to get into a bar.

You have to apply for a federal licance for automatic weapons thru the fbi or atf and must adhere to certain guidelines and provisionss to attain the licance. It costs about 1000 bucks at the least. Must also have no criminal record of any kind.
