>make "I love you because..." cards for family/friends :)

>take each child and trace one of their sweet little hands and write their name, age, and the date inside each tracing and then frame each one!

>make Halloween/Christmas decorations and put them on your windows

>make some Jello in a cake pan and after it has set, cut out jiggly shapes w/ cookie cutters

>make up some funny poems

>have a tea party

>have a picnic on the family room floor

>make some cupcakes and decorate them

>have dinner by candlelight, kids LOVE that!!!

>teach them some card games like Old Maid

>can you say SIDEWALK CHALK!!! (it's the BEST)

>get the game Trouble if you don't already have it, kids love to punch the Trouble bubble :)

>play the game High/Low at dinner every night, ask them what their "High" point of the day was and their "Low" point (if they had one)

>have everyone climb into your bed and read

These are all things I did with my children when they were little, my daughter is 18 yo and my son is 15 yo and they STILL talk about these things :)

Have lots of fun and enjoy each stage 'cuz trust me, they grow so darn FAST!!!

Take your children for a hike around town, the park, or better yet, through a trail in the woods. Let them pick up all the different leaves that they can find. Take them to the library and check out a book that has all the different leaves in it. Go home and have them find all the leaves in the book. Have your 3 yr old glue the leaves onto construction paper while your 7 yr old writes what the leaf is on the paper. Punch holes in the corners and tie it with string. It becomes a book about leaves. I loved doing this with my mom when I was younger.

You can do the same with bugs, rocks, and bottle caps. It is very inexpensive and extremely entertaining. This is something that you can stretch over days or weeks. Make it a challenge to find new leaves all the time to add to your book. This is also something that they can keep and show to their children. Good luck, and I hope you have fun!!

I am also really into photograpy. I buy my 5 yr old a disposable camera and we go on walks. Whenever we see something that she thinks is cool, she takes a picture. When we get them developed, she makes a collage of everything that we saw that day and dates it. We have one heck of a scrap book going with all her collages. She absolutely loves it. It is also a great conversation peice for later.

SCREW those other families. The family isn't getting the grade, the child is. The book should reflect the meanderings of the 7 year old mind. You're getting sucked into the overachiever parents mindset. If pets and friends are her favorite things, go with that. Also, remember that at the 2nd grade level, story books generally have only 2-3 lines of text per page. Just relax and have fun, and let your 7 year old daughter be 7, and if the teacher doesn't grade it accordingly, ask her just whose project it's supposed to be! (PS---Cutting stuff out of magazines to illustrate the pages would be fun and age appropriate. Forget WonderMom and her degree in Graphic Design!)

Do your kids do creative play? Do they play dolls or with cars? Get in on it with them. It is really fun and you learn a lot about them while doing it.

I take it from your other question that the kids are in school and so they already have structure during the day. So, you don't really need to provide structured time. So, let them lead the play time. Play dress up. Let them "script" the play time and you follow along.

Play board games. Cranium makes the best board games. They are so fun. And they have games for all ages. Many kids can play board games that are supposedly above their age range. My 3 yr. old plays Monopoly Junior, Life, Sorry, Uno, Candy Land, etc. But check out Cranium. They have a website. Our family loves their games.

I know that the dollar store, and even Target, has crafts that are like $1/piece. Sometimes they are even cheaper when on sale. We've gotten some that are 25-50 cents. They have the foam crafts where you can make a foam box with jewels, door hangers, can cozies, etc.

Read to them. Or listen to stories on tape. Right now my oldest has us listening to spooky stories on CD. It is cozy to sit around the table with a snack and listen to the stories.

The trick is not to think too hard about it. The kids will enjoy most anything just because you're invovled with them. Like I said, you can let them lead the play. Just be there with them. That is enough.

My daughters are 1 1/2, 3, and 7 1/2. They all love messy play- give them some water and paint and they are happy. We make a lot of paintings (usually finger paint) that I then cut out and use as background for cards for the grandparents. They also love bubbles. My oldest loves it when I have time with just her. Unfortunately, this isn't as often as she would like, but it makes the time more special. We went one time to Wal-Mart and had pedicures done together. Ever since then, she loves to just sit and paint our toenails (I don't allow finger nails to be painted yet). My 3-year-old likes her's done too. They also like to help me with baking and snacks. I found some great snack recipes for kids in a book at the library. They are healthy, easy to make, and the kids enjoy helping. Hope this helped. Could probably come up with more, but short on time. Good luck!

How is sitting in front of the TV creative or fun? What are their interests? Making cookies or other goodies together is always fun. You can assign them the tasks associated with baking according to their age ability. For instance, let the 3 year old stir the bowl, let the 7 year old measure ingredients. Making play dough together and creating things out of play dough is also good. Google recipes for home made play dough. Jello jigglers are also fun to make. All you need is some jello and cookie cutters. Again, google for instructions. Got any old magazines around the house? Give each child a sheet or two of construction paper and some glue & scissors. Tell them to look for pictures of whatever theme the 3 of you decide on ie: animals, people, places, food the list is endless. Have them make a collage. Check out your local library too. They usually offer activities which are free.

7 is a tough age they are not sure weather they like grown up things or still want young stuff.

But, what sports does she like or what is her fav subject in school?
opt 2: make-up every girl loves to dress up make it fun.
opt 3: make it a ritual of board games or cards find which she likes

if all else fails let her know you want a special time with whether its mall walking or something at least once a week eventually she will get into the ritual and know that your time to "catch up" on each others thoughts.

A little bit of toe nail is fine... but I agree with you. Long nails are kinda low.
