The above responder may work for a cable company but doen't know anything about HDTV. At present ALL BUT 10% of prime-time network broadcast is in HDTV. Every new TV show (except for some reality shows) is broadcast in HD. All major sports events (Olympics, World Series, basketball championships, Super Bowl, etc) as well as several NFL and major league games are in HDTV every week. ESPN HD broadcasts all its games in HD. Plus there are channels devoted to HD such as DiscoveryHD and HDnet. It is now harder to find non-HD shows than HD ones. There is more HD available than you could ever hope to watch.
Now to your question: it depends on the cable company and the satellite company. In my area, Comcast broadcasts the full bandwidth signal it receives from the networks and the local station. DirecTV limits the bandwidth of many of its channels, although some look very good (DiscoveryHD, ESPN-HD and HDnet in particular), so cable looks better than DirecTV for many programs in my area. Dish Satellite is supposed to do a better job of picture quality, equalling that of cable. DirecTV is expanding their satellite's bandwidth capability and will no doubt be improving their picture in the next few years. However, each local cable company has the option of re-encoding their signals to reduce bandwidth, and so it is possible that in your area, cable could be poorer. See if you can find an internet discussion group in your area regarding HDTV, and see what the comments are.

First off, HD is a joke. Presently, less than 10% of all broadcasting is actually done in HD. Don't let the sat companies fool you. Sure they have all sorts of "HD" channels, but look closer. A large amount of the **** they show on those channels are not and never were in HD. Hogan's Heroes and the A-Team were never shot in HD, therefore, you are'nt watching them in HD. On top of that, satellite systems are more expensive to upkeep and update, suffer from things like rainfade and snowfade, and don't offer much in the way of unique programming...unless you REALLY like home shopping channels. Call your cable company and see what they have to offer. And if you haven't bought an HD set yet, save your money.
