Photojournalism is a nice career to choose, but you need to be clear of what your job's gonna be...

I don't know where u live.., this is the condition with INDIA. I think it will provide some inputs for you.

First on lenses: A wide angle lens or otherwise normal lens 35-70 mm would do good. Recently some companies do create lenses with 28-80 mm range would also be nice. Your carrier also depends on what kind of journal or magazine you were about. I mean the segment of people it reaches. Adapt yourself with your publication’s style! Wide angle lenses would help you in bring the scene into the frame. Keep in mind, you can crop unwanted portions in your photographs with modern softwares, but tuff to create a portion extra on to your output! So, whatever you shoot, give more space around the frame needed. You actually don't need a zoom lens unless you were into a fashion segment!

A photojournalist has to have the capability to think & develop on-spot concepts! Select shots and organise them while shooting. If you were in an event or a cultural show, shoot as much u can! You are not supposed to miss out anything and say 'Sorry' for that. Load new batteries or have a back-up for everything like flash equipments, film rolls or external memory chips etc.

Have a compact camera (cheap - point-and-shoot camera) with you, which will always ready to serve you in case of quick exposure.

Understand the importance of the picture you take and then release the shutter... :-)

Make your goals and interests clear and i may able to tell you more..! :-)
