The unclean animals were considered to be unclean because of diseases that they carried. If you see a pig; it eats the slop of the earth. Also a lobster carries diseases because it's at the bottom of the ocean floor where it eats all the junk. Here's more information in these sites why people should't eat these unclean creatures:

In the time of Solomon the Hebrews had temples to YHVH and other temples to Shekinah or Asherah, which were generally in the open, on hills, used large fires, feasting with shellfish, pork, varieties of sex that would not produce children, etc. In order to give the Hebrews a 'political makover' and change who they thought themselves to be so that they might survive in the competitions for resources that the other nations of the area were engaging in, Solomon tried to destroy all worship of any other Hebrew Deities. This meant outlawing everything connected with their worship, and backdating the laws so that they seemed to be inherited from a warlike group that were the forefathers of the Hebrew nation of the time.

You would think people would read the Bible and say, "Hey, why is it that there's never a reason given for these things?"

People say that the food things are because they were foods that could make you sick and people back then didn't have the technology to prepare them or the knowledge to prepare them safely. So why make them an abomination? Why not just tell them how to make them safely?
