I injured my knee in 7th grade playing basketball and then making it worse by continuing with track. I'm now a Junior in high school and I am still having a problem with movement and sharp pain the randomly comes and goes. I have gone through over 5 months of physical therapy and stretching and muscle strengthing to try and make it better. But now m doctor thinks the only thing left is surgery. I know a lot of people that have had knee surgery and they have never really been able to be the same. But I know a lot of people that have been able to go back to everything. I wasn't able to finish my soph year in track last year because of the aount of pain i was in. So what would recomend me to do or try to help keep me out of surgery???

Okay and to clear things up a bit. I've taken Advil and Motrin and Icy hot has no affect on me what so ever. I always try to keep my knee from swelling but it still becomes inflammed and swells to be a lot bigger than the other....

Ask the specialist point blank what the chances are of having permanent problems, with, or without the surgery. If he waffles, or doesn't have an answer, get a second opinion. And get a diagnosis out of him.
Most insurance comapanies will pay for a second opinion, some require one before an elective surgery.
And get your parents to back you. I know they want what is best for you.
I got hurt at work, it was a torn rotator cuff[shoulder]. The workman's comp doctor put off the MRI for months, and I suffered, did not do a good job at work, could not do anything at home,or for fun, and was harrassed by co-workers and the supervisor for being on a work restriction. I was in pain for months. It was not a good situation. Pain can affect every aspect of life, even get in the way of getting good grades.
Talk to the doctor, start there, it will help you make an informed decision of what to do.

If you have tried everything like cortisone injections, therapy, stretching, it just may be time for surgery.
Ice and ointments can only do so much...if that is not curing it, then there must be more to it. There is a possibility you could have some type of pinched nerve
etc. Possible knee fluid etc. Have a MRI done on your knee perhaps that will show more...you never know what is until the area is opened up by surgery. Make sure you have the best surgeon in your area and hospital.

I managed to avoid surgery for over two years...and have done more damage to my knee than I should have. Surgery is on November 7th, and I can't wait, because I can barely walk and the pain is awful.....Don't do what I did! Listen to your Doctor! It's not going to get better with a pain pill...that will just keep you moving and doing more damage. Get the help you need now, while you are young...it will make your recovery much easier! Good luck and God bless.

Get a specialist for the surgery. Life is too long to spend the rest of it in pain!
