There are two on most large commercial jets.
A cockpit voice recorder and a flight data recorder.
The voice recorder records the pilots words and also can
be helpful distinguishing certain sounds.
The flight data recorder records critical parameters like
air speed, and altitude.

The flight recorder called the "black box" is a recording of everything that happens on the "flight-deck", including conversations. It records the movement of the aircraft. It records the engine performance, and the performance, speed, altitude, fuel consumption, hydraulic performance, flat settings, air speed,
stall conditioins. You name it and it is on film.

black box or flight recorder is used for various use the number one use is to tell the events before a crash so they can have some type of clue what the cause was
